Although there are too many central characters, you become more involved in their entanglements as time passes (although I still think they could have cut the parts with the girl who gets run over along with the architect). Alan Arkin as the insurance manager's story is the most compelling, and he gives a solid performance. There are problems with the screenplay, mostly because this is a film that deals primarily in conversation without a lot of action and telling rather than showing a lot of the time, but it is edited in a subtly unique way which covers up some of its flaws. Overall, not a masterpiece, but it's definitely interesting cinema.

Austerit rappresentativa da cinema scandinavo e pi vicina a Fassbinder che a Herzog o Wenders. A tratti noioso.

David E (nl) wrote: I got interested into watching "Altered States" after listening to industrial/doom metal band Godflesh, especially since their 1st album (Streetcleaner) featured an image from the movie. After seeing some clips from YouTube, I got even more interested. Then I bought the movie (in VHS) & watched it: the special effects are ultimately unique (even for a movie from 1980), the acting is serious, the settings look menacing at times, the story is quite intriguing, & it has one of the best endings of all time. Gonna watch it again sometime soon.
