Fire and Ice

In this animated tale, a tiny village is destroyed by a surging glacier, which serves as the deadly domain for the evil Ice Lord, Nekron. The only survivor is a young warrior, Larn, who vows to avenge this act of destruction. The evil continues, however, as Nekron's palace of ice heads straight towards Fire Keep, the great fortress ruled by the good King Jarol. When Jarol's beautiful daughter, Teegra, is abducted by Nekron's sub-human ape-like creatures, Larn begins a daring search for her. What results is a tense battle between good and evil, surrounded by the mystical elements of the ancient past.

Jeffrey M (nl) wrote: Inexplicable money, an accidental shooting, ruthless nefarious ne'er do wells looking to regain their ill-gotten gains and a love story to boot, A Single Shot is a sort of backwoods noir piece. Centered on a hunter, John Moon, fresh off a separation from his wife, the film explores the unfolding series of events following an accidental shooting, caused by him. As any good noir film, A Single Shot has an appropriately atmospheric tone, combined with methodic pacing, eerie characters, and an impending sense of dread. Overall, director David Rosenthal's direction was able to capture the right mood, and rendered generally effective world-building of a hillbilly town. This is the best part of the film, which combines this effective world building with excellent cinematography. The problems come down to the script. It's never quite as clever as it thinks it is, seeming to out-think itself in the last act. How Sam Rockwell's character is blackmailed never seems quite believable, something more apt for a horror film, and the machinations of those that oppose him are too thinly sketched. So, too, are the characters. The cast itself is quite capable, headlined by a strong showing form Sam Rockwell, yet we never fully understand the dynamics between them. Opportunities are had for some rich character studies and fully distinctive takes on the narrative, Cohen brothers style, yet these are never really developed in A Single Shot, which relies too much on the style of menace than the actual narrative building of it. This leaves otherwise promising performances, William H. Macy's to be left rather adrift. Overall, it's certainly an enjoyable film with a lot of impressive elements, yet never fully meets its potential with its delivery.3.5/5 Stars

David S (jp) wrote: A film in Kurdish, with the main cast dominated by children, "Turtles Can Fly" is a sombre look at life at the end of Saddam's rule, and the beginning of the American invasion. With young children running the trade and food supply of a refugee town, it touches into your heart. However, from another angle the desperation and the haste in which these children have to face harsh reality is terrifying. There were a few points that distracted me while watching this. I'm not sure why the main character shouted the entire time, and also why so much of the dialogue was un-translated into the subtitles. Despite these issues, the film was well-filmed, and brilliantly acted. I have no idea how they got the young actors to do what they did. A little more explanation would have helped at times when you weren't quite sure how life happened.7/10

Caria M (de) wrote: Mandy Moore: I find her very charismatic - I cannot stop watching! In sort of a traffic-accident kind of way, I was drawn in by the stellar cast of Peter Gallagher as an aging hispter radio personality, Mandy Moore as a "jaded" teen, and her mother played by the always wonderful Allison Janney, hurt and rejected mother. Visually it was a treat (filmed in Ontario, the place became yet another character). The soundtrack, was extremely likable. Sometimes the story fell flat and the dialogue was awkward, but all in all a good watch.
