I've always loved Alan Rickman as an actor, but in this movie he was especially brilliant and the part was tailor made for him. He and Emma Thompson have a beautiful on-screen chemistry and their characters' personalities played beautifully against each other: she's relaxed and sunshine bright, he's manic and gloomy, and his self-loathing demeanor but at the same time self-confident is always a Rickman trademark that he's perfected with each character he plays, which makes them so much more human and identifiable. The content really struck a chord with me because how many times have we caught ourselves looking back at past events and think that God-awful thought: "what if..." but inevitably we all have to move forward. It was really an intelligent film with a wonderfully production quality, where it has the minimalistic feel of an indie film but the magnetic star-power that would rival any epic, summer blockbuster popcorn flick but with twice the content.
Jillian L (de) wrote: This is some of the best work I've seen Paul Dano do. He was really interesting to watch. What works for this movie as a whole is its simplicity. Yeah, it's a story we've seen before, but it was done really well. Also, we are used to seeing absentee father type stories from the child's point of view. This time, it's from the father's. One of the most heartbreaking parts of the whole thing is when Ellen (played by the adorable Shaylena Mandigo) point blank asks him why he's never visited her. And then watching Dano's character try to explain it was so sad. Sometimes, simplicity is key.

John H (us) wrote: Its development deploys some abrupt, confusing reversals, and it lacks a true reason for being, but Lean's assured direction and Hepburn's great performance turns SUMMERTIME into a delightful romance.

But it's a fun film that sadly has seen it's reputation hurt by the high number of bad sequels. The entire cast is a joy to watch and I grew up with this movie so maybe there is favoritism, but I'll like it to the day I die. There isn't much to say other than that. As I said, it's not a high brow comedy and if you're okay with that I can't see why anyone wouldn't like this movie. They sure don't make them like this anymore.
