Jan D (fr) wrote: This is screenwriter Alan Sharp's most unknown western. Sharp wrote both "The Hired Hand" and "Ulzana's Raid". He also wrote the script for Arthur Penn's neo-noir "Night Moves". "Billy Two Hats" is not your typical western movie, and I doubt that you've seen anyone quite like it. The movie was filmed in Israel, and the white desert only add more depth to the lingering melancholy of Sharp's piece. Director Ted Kotcheff is known chiefly for his 1982 movie "Rambo - First Blood" and the George Segal/Jane Fonda 1977 comedy "Fun With Dick And Jane". "Billy Two Hats" remains mostly unknown and forgotten by most movie viewers, but as far as plot and content, "Billy Two Hats" might be Kotcheff's only movie of lasting worth as a director. Sharp writes mainly about relationships. The relationships between men, and the unsound relationships between men and women (Sian Barbara Allen's performance as a stuttering housewife is really touching) and about those incapable of having a relationship with anyone (Jack Warden as Sheriff Henry Gifford). Jack Warden and Gregory Peck are both exellent in this one. Warden's portrait of a man so cold hearted and cruel only makes Peck's character, Arch Deans, seem more light hearted and kind. "Billy Two Hats" is yet another revisionist western gem from the 70s, and even in all it's violence it's truly a heartwarming and beautiful movie.
