Calvin C (au) wrote: I thought A SEPARATION was one of the best films of its given year. I understand ABOUT ELLY came before that film but just released this year and I can easily say this new film from Asghar Farhadi is one of the year's best. It starts off as a drama about a group of friends on vacation and ends up being a dark mystery where nothing is what it seems. All the characters are suspicious and you have no idea who to trust. Farhadi is great at developing his characters slowly in the beginning, setting everything up, so when the real plot kicks in, we too are able to judge them because we feel we have known them the same amount of time as those on screen. Grade: A
Michael P (es) wrote: Absolutely fantastic film. Main reason to watch this is a career defining turn from Michael Caine. Its great to see such a seasoned performer still bringing such a powerful performance. He adds little nuances and movements to make you believe every inch of his character. The story is one that definitley resonates in todays society. This sort of thing is happening everyday...probably right now...as you're reading this. By that I mean the urban viloence and gang culture...not necessarily the vigilante old man. Good support from the rest of the brit cast too, helping to hammer the point home. You find yourself behind Harry from the first frame to the last despite his violent actions. Hes just doing what we would all love to do to every scumbag who ever crossed our paths. Everyone should see this film.
Scott F (au) wrote: A disappointing addition to the BSG canon. It would have played better in the series proper, especially if they used it to set up the final episodes. But now, nearly a year later, it feels more like they cobbled together some deleted scenes and are presenting them as a movie. Its biggest flaw, however, is that it doesn't add anything to the story. It answers questions only the die-hardest of fans might have -- but they're small, unimportant questions.

Eriel B (us) wrote: This is the most beautiful and hypnotic art film I've seen. Perhaps it's due to the aesthethic of the film--to me, it is Byzantine/Orthodox church art come to life (my most favourite type). The film in itself is a representation of a lot of symbollic religious imagery/ideas--a series of old paintings in motion. As with most art films, not everyone will "get" it. But that's part of the point. Most art films aren't meant to be "got"--rather to make you FEEL. If you are not the type to understand or appreciate that kind of thing, just don't bother.
Anthony V (mx) wrote: Great bit of French Noir by Louis Malle. Superb direction, amazing cinematography and a knockout Miles Davis soundtrack combines with a star-making performance from Jeanne Moreau and great supporting performances to make a treat for the eyes and ears. This precursor to the French New Wave has a well earned reputation!
