It has a WTF factor of about 8 on the scale of 10 (my buddy said WTF eight times through out the movie). Be sure you have the unrated/uncut version. Kill the rich, the slimey bastards.

That said, it is a very good example of Wayne's later westerns, solidly acted by everyone involved. No great thoughts here, just sit back and enjoy the ride as as Jacob McCandles (John Wayne) and company dispatch the bad guys led by Richard Boone as a murderous kidnapper. In a tongue in cheek reference to Wayne's rather advanced age for the role, various bad guys in the movie repeatedly say "I thought you were dead!" when Jacob McCandles tells them his name, to which Wayne replies 'Not hardly'!

(kr) wrote: What a stunning film from Kaneto Shindo! It features no dialogue and is shot like a documentary following a family of farmers that live on a barren island and their daily struggle for survival. The B&W cinematography creates some of the most beautiful images I have ever seen. The score is haunting and highly memorable. The acting is flawless. This masterpiece is highly recommended!
