Whilst it doesn't give justice to the crew of the ship who deserve much respect, - (due to the bad movie effects), it is very sad what happened. The people who ignored the calls for help, neglected to send help, covered it up, and stitched up the Commanding Officer should be ashamed.

If you have been in the situation then you will relate to the heaven and hell of the freebie, but even if you haven't there is a risk that you and your partner one day will! So its definitely a moral story I recommend watching. Katie Aselton does an incredible job in directing as well as starring.

Tim F (fr) wrote: this isnt to bad! segal has become heavy though, maybe he thought he needed more thrust or stability in his moves ... :p very good stunt scenes, only its rather noticeble that a stuntman is used (see the image of the trailer here) the story isnt bad, but its jabbering arround the same deal. Segal still is eligable for martial arts but face it, hes getting old. acting snt bad, slight mistakes here and there but certainly ok!

Grant H (fr) wrote: Ok movie. It's certainly the weakest in the franchise, trying offer more in the sense of story and universe over action, but fails to do so, resulting in a boring film with great action, but weak performances. The story is so focused on introducing more characters that it doesn't even feel like a Mad Max movie.

Matthew S (kr) wrote: Nagisa Oshima's mid 1970's film remains as controversial and provocative now as it must have been upon it's very limited and often censored/banned initial release. Sada Abe was a real person who committed the crime depicted in Oshima's film. However this movie is far more focused on "the folk legend" regarding Sada Abe than the truth. Set just before and during WWII, a brothel maid is promoted to prostitute and begins a mutually-satisfying sexual relationship with a handsome married man. The two characters are realistically played by Eiko Matsuda and Tatsuya Fuji. Nagisa Oshima felt the sexuality of this relationship was essential to the core of both the movie and what he wanted to express within it's confines. Both actors engaged in actual sex. It is filmed with style by Cinematographer, Hideo Ito. However, Oshima has these sexual encounter filmed in a way that can only be called "erotic pornography." Full-on genitalia connection and release are filmed like a high-end porn film. It is disorienting at first, because this film is a serious examination of cultural / societal repression / oppression, sexual pleasure, love, intimacy, trust, obsession, obsessiveness and the disintegration of sanity. The film also offers an interesting perception of what was most likely true in Japanese culture of the 1930's and 1940's -- our male protagonist has no interest in war. He appears to oppose his country's choice to engage in war. He is essentially a peaceful man locked into an unhappy marriage. Our female protagonist is a lower income/class woman who has been forced to take the humiliating job as a maid in a brothel. It is a sad commentary that the promotion to prostitute is "gain." Oshima also seems to want to tie the infamous true story of Sada Abe to a critique of Japan's pornography fantasy of sex which is often blended with violence -- and degradation of the woman. These themes are all explored, but what really matters and what emerges from this stylish, but provocative use of sexuality and shocking violence -- is how a culture's denial of expression of feelings and intimacy restrict options. These two characters are pushed too hard and too far. Their sexual pleasures and intimacy turn toward insanity. The ending is shocking. This is shock cinema. However, it is a masterful and interestingly romantic view of sexual intimacy that goes very wrong. At turns cerebral, erotic, subversive, perverse, beautiful and ultimately truly shocking. Nagisa Oshima is an important experimental film of note. Note: This film has been re-rated to an NC-17. The rating is appropriate for the film. This is an adult film. Not for children.
