lourdh r (kr) wrote: As we have seen and we have known already a film based on pilots and flights and bombs its always goes to Iraq or Pakistan or Afghanistan the same way this film also goes to these places... nothing so special in this film as there r lots of films have already taken in the same basis... not so powerful technical used equipments in this film... all are old models and old stories and copies screenplay... not so entertaining... over all not so good... its "OK" thing film...

Adryan G (de) wrote: While it doesn't really do anything new or particularly powerful, what it does it does well. Perhaps most interesting is the a-typical suture technique of never showing the narrator but always occupying his position/gaze.

Alistair N (us) wrote: This film stands in the shade of the actor and director's previous collaboration on Mephisto. Redl is more complex and therefore less pure and arresting than the relatively simple story of Mephisto, it's aim to wide and scattergun to make the impact it desires. The irony of Redl being both promoted and then ruined for political reasons because he is an insider remains interesting, but Redl is a hard character to truly invest in, despite the fact we are clearly intended to, and his tragedy at the end is therefore less moving - and interesting - than it should be. However, Brandauer is truly exceptional - why did he not have a better career in film? - carving every slice of Redl's complex, manufactured personaly with a loving skill. Very strong support from Niklas and Mueller Stahl as the men who both personally and professionally betray him and Szabo's direction is tight even if the length of the film is too much. A thematic companion piece rather than a stand alone classic, but it has moments of inspiration.

Jeff M (br) wrote: It's too flip to be dismissive of this film as simply 'dated.' It paints a very clear picture of the social mores of the mid-50's and one only has to give this gorgeously lensed film a look to obtain understanding of where we were and how we got here. Holden, Robertson, Strasburg, Novak, Russell...all terrific. Striking visuals in lush Cinemascope.

Stanley K (au) wrote: Disappointing effort considering the writer/director's track record. A poorly developed kernel of a potentially interesting sci-fi concept bogged down by an uninteresting action thriller framework, a low-chemistry outlaw couple in a trite on the run subplot and dull retro-futuristic setting. Further burdened by evidence of heavy-handed editing that leaves behind too many inconsistencies and lacunae. Only saving grace is some striking digital photography.
