Will G (kr) wrote: An interesting film, spanning French and Dutch by means of Belgium, and following transplanted African father and son when they are separated and (through creative and dangerous means) reunited. Great b/w cinematography, and some good performances.
Kyle G (gb) wrote: Treads pop-biopic water without getting its hair too wet. An interesting synthesis of sweet bons mots and bitter choses mondaines, without relaxing too far into easy formula. Audrey Tautou plays a formative Coco Chanel: in a preface, as an orphan; in most of the run-time, as a down-on-her-luck cabaret singer; and finally as an aspiring fashionista and uneasy paramour. The Fontaine/Fontaine directing/writing duo makes a decent vision of Chanel's early pre-fame Bildungsroman. Even the movie's loudest themes -- 'fashion', 'sexuality', 'convention vs. novelty' -- have a surprising sort of quietness and subtlety about them.

Robin L (us) wrote: One of the three survivors of S21, a death camp where 17,000 prisoners were interrogated, brutalized and killed returns to the facility a generation later in an attempt to wring some understanding from his former tormentors. Because they were mere terrified teenaged flunkies at the time--most of the guards wound up being murdered, too--the film creates a weird and inadvertent sympathy for these guys, who are clearly ill-equipped to contemplate the enormity of their crimes. The decision to present the sequences as long, uninterrupted takes only intermittently pays off.

Lee M (ag) wrote: Exhausting and fruitless: Having seen it, you know nothing more about strippers or the stripper mentality than you did going in. What's the point?
Tim G (ru) wrote: Reads like a Brit Rom Com, plays like a Brit Rom Com, and then the lead robs his own bank and finds himself in bondage to a bidet at a motel to avoid a couple of Russian thugs cutting up Nicole Kidman (his mail order Russian bride). All the rest of the Brit are familiar faces on the Chanel 4 comedy circuit.
Javier B (nl) wrote: Forget the tecnical aspects, the fact that the sun won't burn out for another 5 billion years, and the thought of making a nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan AND getting into outter space; after all that is said and done and you suspend disbelif, this is one of the best Sci-Fi pics I have ever seen. Visually stunning, acting was amazing, the direction was on point and the story itself was filled with so much insight into the human psyche that this could have been written by a theologist. Def recommended.
