Although it's a bit heavy on the clichs (lucky captain Jack has a slower, older ship, but of course he's a smarter, better seaman), but the underdog story really works, there are a few good set pieces and some interesting subplots (particularly the one with the jinx).

Long takes, insane choreography, and endless rewatchability. There is a kind of airy, dance-like quality to them. I call it beautifully chaotic. No buts about it, this is John Woo's total masterwork. There will never be another like it.As far as story is concerned... Well, things huff and puff during the lulls, but that third act is enough fire and blood to fill a hundred other thin stories. So, I'm forgiving.

When her cross is removed by a werewolf she gets bitten by a noble vampire. She hires a quite hunter named D to kill the vampire that bit her.D is a dhampir a half human/vampire and only has interest in killing vampires. He heads to a castle that is filled with demons, monsters, ghosts and several other dangerous foes to kill the noble vampire. Using light, his sword, and his cunning experience he is able to hold his own against large variety of foes. Vampire Hunter D is a pretty good classic anime. It is well packaged and has beautiful and vibrant colors for its time. D is a great character that is entertaining to watch. There is a great variety of creatures that vary in size, type and style. Ghost werewolves, seductive snake women, vampires, werewolves are just the tip of the iceberg. The styles in the castle are quite vast and include scientific looking rooms, marshes, dark coves, and your more traditional European look. The variety is really what makes the film stand out give its rather basic premise. After some time, some of the charm wears off and the movie drags, and the final showdown with the count is sadly forgettable. -2.23.2017

Acting varied, but Jon Voight did a great job (as always) as the alleged instigator of the massacre of innocent people. Well worth viewing, if only to learn something that the Mormons who show up at our doorstep wouldn't tell you.
