The new monster, Titanosaurus, while dealing with a comedic design, is effectively characterized and has become a fan favorite. Dr. Mafume and Miss Katsuma are also really interesting characters, showing a complexity that isn't typically exhibited in late Showa films. Unfortunately, they're not exactly played by the greatest actors, and their fellow cast is even less so. The monster fights are awesome, but be prepared, there's about as much Godzilla as in the newest Godzilla film. Many credit Ishiro Honda's return as the reason why this film has increased respect, but any of the director's actual duties - or editor's for that matter - are about as sloppy as when Jun Fukuda was in charge of the production. And that, my friends, was a sloppy Joe. At the end of the day, it's one of the best Showa films, and one of the better Godzilla films in general.
