John M (mx) wrote: Revenge of the Nerds. This is a documentary about the biggest cash prize in competitive video gaming history: $1 million dollars goes to the winner of a DotA 2 competition (which, for the layman, is a multiplayer online battle arena mod for Warcraft). I did not know anything about this before I sat down to watch, nor did I know exactly what DotA is. It focuses less on the mechanics of the game, and more on a few choice players, as well as the competition itself. Now I do enjoy video games myself, but not to this extreme. There really is a bit of a culture difference with the oversea players, as these kids reach celebrity levels; you get to see all of the promotional photos/videos with them in cool poses, and it is surreal to say the least. As a documentary, it is pretty accessible, if only from a competitive standpoint. You know how it is easy to get into a poker competition on ESPN when they're only showing you the most interesting hands? It's similar to how it is here, and the reactions of the announcers are almost identical to somebody calling a tied Superbowl game in the 4th quarter. The human element is the most interesting part about this, and the parent's reactions to their lifestyles that their sons have chosen are interesting and completely understandable. At 75 minutes, it doesn't overstay its welcome, but it doesn't address the one question I could not get out of my brain: who the hell funded this?

Kurt A (jp) wrote: Yor is one of those movies that reminds you why you watch these movies in the first place. It's b grade 80 foreign sci-fi fantasy at its best. From the very beginning it's clear that this is no typical Italian schlock-fest but something much more. Yor is funny in and of himself. He's a mega blond bad-ass barbarian with a heart and a brain. His desire to help people out is constantly getting him into trouble but it also makes him fast friends with would be victims. His friends question his strange medallion and thus begins his quest to find out who the real Yor is. Along the way he fights beasts, purple faced gorilla people, a tribe of diseased desert people, technology, a woman's envy, and the OVERLORD himself. But do I even really need to tell you who comes out on top?The best parts of this movie by far are the sky bird becomes hang glider scene and the infamous Pag hanging upside down trapeze act over the atomic pile miracle of dexterity. Which leaves you asking if this the same aging man with moobs that you've seen during the first 80 minutes of this movie?I bought this movie from the Amazon Video On Demand marketplace because it is the only non-region 2 digital copy available. The quality is VASTLY superior to the VHS copy that I also own. The audio track was completely remastered and I picked up all sorts of lines that I never made out before. Plus you get to see it in all of its cleaned up wide screen glory. All that quality is not kind to some of the effects which already looked pretty shaky but it does add a wealth of dimension to some of the island shots.Overall I love this movie. I'd rate it higher except that I think 3.5 is as high as I can go on joy alone.Definitely pick this up used or off of Amazon. It's well worth your time.
