(mx) wrote: This was little more than a melodramatic romance novel brought to film, but one that was well told and interestingly presented. The characters were well drawn and their back stories satisfactorily filled in. The three pairs of actors portraying the women were excellently matched, the younger women easily discernible in the older. This viewer found the dark haired young Esther, played by Willeke van Ammelrooy to be particularly enchanting and the New Zealand scenery to be breathtakingly beautiful. The story was told in flashbacks as the three older women prepared for a funeral and revolved around the flight that brought them together and the events after they had emigrated that drove them apart. This viewer was surprised at how completely he was drawn in, even shedding a tear or two at the sweet way in which the film ended. While this will not alter the course of human events, it will nevertheless entertain.

(jp) wrote: Mostly dark and sad. Good movie, but not entirely enjoyable for my taste. Good, but not my cup of tea.
(jp) wrote: This film is very unpolished Broken Lizard material, but you can see their humor "mature" through the writing teams more recent endeavors.

(nl) wrote: Two American plainclothes police officers working in Vietnam during the war (they had those?) investigate a string of murders of Vietnamese prostitutes who had babies with American fathers. Cover-up seems likely as the officers are ordered out of the country. Decent enough film but probably not good enough to be remembered long-term.

(au) wrote: Un Ken Loach mineur, au service des grands ideaux du cineastes mais dont le traitement simpliste et le heros naif (un communiste qui revient d'Amerique) limitent la profondeur.
(kr) wrote: Quite simple and totally endearing. The lack of dialogue is made up with humorous visual storytelling.
(au) wrote: Funny premise; limp script and two-dimensional characters.
