Ice Bound

Ice Bound

It is during the final months of 1999 that 46-year-old physician Jerri Nielsen (Susan Sarandon) finds herself stranded at the Amundsen-South Pole Research Station along with a tiny staff of researchers and technicians. Although, at first, there is little love lost between the somewhat aloof Nielsen and her more down-to-earth colleagues, a strong bond develops among them as the extreme Antarctic winter progresses. Nielsen, in particular, grows quite close to two of the "Polies": Big John Penny (Aidan Devine) and Claire Furinski (Cynthia Mace).

Johnathon W (mx) wrote: Charming anime movie that manages to be both heart-warming & funny, despite the serious subject matter. Directors Kon & Furuya makes excellent use of the animated form, despite being a realistic story, while Murai's story keeps some surprising twist coming to the end. Great movie to put on your Christmas rotations.

Aj S (us) wrote: I recently rewatched this movie, haven't seen it since I was 11, yes I saw this movie at 11, it was a father/son movie night and dad wanted to watch this on HBO. From what I remembered, the 11 yr old me thought it was funny, mainly because Eric Roberts was such a goofy/silly character. 11 yrs later I watched it on Netflix, I can easily say that "The Pope of Greenwich Village" is a truely colorful, funny, and very authentic slice of the New York City street life. One of the most underrated, overlooked films of the 1980s. Mickey Rourke gives a fantastic performance as Charlie, a wise-guy who just wants to make it big in life. Eric Roberts as the hilarious and totally out there third cousin of Charlie. The two decide to partake in a job, stealing from a gangster known as "Bed Bug Eddie", played by the incredible Burt Young. Things don't go so well, when an undercover cop discovers the raid and is accidently killed in the manner of catching Paulie & Charlie. The movie has great composits of the NYC life, you really get a first hand look of the streets, the people, and the lifestyle itself. It's what makes this movie feel so authentic. Great dialogue, and memorable funny banter scenes between Paulie & Charlie make this a view for all to see.

Brad S (ru) wrote: This is an excellent from crime film master Jean-Pierre Melville. It's beautifully shot, has an engaging story, a solid score, strong performances and some great twists. Jean-Paul Belmondo is excellent in this. Anyone who likes foreign classics or noir films needs to see this!

jay n (ru) wrote: Suspenseless version of the Poe story with terrible pacing and inept direction. Michael Cardelle is the best of the cast but that's not really high praise since everybody else is appallingly bad. Cute boys in and out of their underwear only goes so far and here it wasn't far enough.
