(de) wrote: It's about a shy, unworldly and awkward lady with a propensity for Sheldon Cooper styled cleanliness who gets caught is a type of Catfish hoax that works out for her. It's very slow moving and I fell asleep twice while rewatching it. It's very predictable with little drama worth only a one time viewing.
(jp) wrote: Actually, it's just a comedy of errors - but an excellent one! It actually achieved to be some sort of noir comedy. Totally implausible, way too many times over the top and not exactly well acted (Bully Herbig is maybe the only one who could pull that role off without being ridiculous in a bad way - he is of course - but that's the charme of the film - how is this possible? I have no idea and I can't really explain why it works. Short summary of the film (I hope I can shorten it down enough - it's quite labyrinthine): Jrgen Vogel and Bully Herbig play two German comedians who dream of going to Hollywood in the wake of Hitler's rise to power - one of them (Vogel) is communist and has to go underground. After a while Herbig also has to leave the country (although he's completely apolitical). He flees like many fellow (mostly) communist Germans to Moscow where he finds shelter in the Hotel Lux (which really existed). There he gets confused with Hitler's astrologists who now shall foresee Stalin's future... and then it all begins. The first drama role of Herbig required some serious comedic talent (and some serious Russian studies I guess) but he's just perfect casted. If you ever get a hand on a copy of this film - buy it, rent it, steal it, I don't care but watch it and see yourself.

(fr) wrote: One of my all-time favourites. The performances by Nicholson, Hunt and Kinnear are just simply outstanding; award-worthy, in fact, and surrounded by a solid supporting cast. Well written with developed characters. A movie about the psychology of understanding people. Every time I watch it I feel a little bit better about my dysfunctional self. It touches me every time I watch it.

(ag) wrote: See my The Swimmer Review! Beautiful Existentialistic moody melancholy omipotent provoking...raw...deeper than itself oceanic glimpse of one life lost in the struggle.
(ca) wrote: Essential. This film shows the human spirit naked before the unlying lense of Wiseman.
(us) wrote: I liked this a LOT more than the critics did! Sure, I can see how people hate the "found footage" thing, but this movie goes about it a bit creatively. The story does have some predictability to it, but (for me, at least) it never stopped being interesting. I got hooked right away. I am happy that the Director of this is taking on TMNT 2!
(gb) wrote: Forgot I had already seen it... and it wasn't good the first time around.
(au) wrote: An absolutely outstanding build up to an unpredictable ending. Featherstone's subtleties and nuances while being possessed by the demon are a chilling delight to watch. Oren Peli has truly struck gold in this low budget box office monster!
(au) wrote: Some original concepts at play in the lore of the story, but the film itself couldn't be more paint-by-numbers.
