Italian for Beginners

This fifth Danish Dogme film is about six vulnerable individuals whose lives are interwoven. In a city suburb, a young minister arrives to take up duties at a local church. He is persuaded by his assistant to join an Italian night school class, and he soon becomes the centre of a group of people to whom fate has dealt quite serious blows. Gradually each one in the group manages to overcome his/her predicament and find a happy solution. This Dogma production was shown at the Berlinale in 2001 where it surprisingly won a silver medal.

Tsubaki S (jp) wrote: The complex relation between a devoted wife and amputee husband is explored to it's most raw levels by Mr Wakamatsu. She is more than just the devoted pasive housewife, and he's more than just another guy who fought in the war. You could accuse Wakamatsu of being too blunt with the anti-nationalistic message, showing the blind loyalty of the towns people over and over, along with the images of the medals, the propaganda in the news about Japan winning the war and so on. The real meat and juice of the story is in the relation between the two main characters, both actors giving fantastic performances, becoming the foundation of the film.

Jamie C (jp) wrote: A very good film, Really funny and the fight scenes were well done, Seann William Scott plays his part well, A good comedy film worth watching.

Jacob D (jp) wrote: Great movie that was surprisingly funny and heartfelt.

WS W (it) wrote: Quite disappointing indeed. Thought it would be a story about a struggling, dying father; but turns out to be more a portrayal of miserable life of social bottom class + illegal immigrants.

Jacob P (mx) wrote: An interesting horror flick with a devious plot.

Dr A (fr) wrote: Starts in a very sweet way, artistic even, but then, after 2/3s of the movie is getting "somewhere" it drifts, like the boat the movie is partly set in, into a pompous and pretentious pice of crap, just to end it all with a very forced explosion and a freeze frame. It just didn't work. I was even expecting the mother to get some sex with someone, kill the kid, drown, SOMETHING... this film is another great example of a filmmaker getting away with a film production with first rate actors and no focus of where the hell the film is going... but, hey, Manuel de Oliveira was 96 when he filmed this piece. It was a great way to take a road movie to the high seas... 3.0 stars for the very good performances by the mom and daughter roles.

Jon T (us) wrote: Unfortunately, it's just not very funny. It's kind of confusing because I could tell they were going for some kind of gag with a lot of the townspeople and yet I was at a loss to explain exactly what the joke was supposed to be. So a lot of the film just fell flat and it didn't even manage to make the tired sports underdog formula work for it completely.

Marco F (jp) wrote: This is as raw as filmmaking gets. An incredible experience of a film, I was immediately hooked by this film; the way this film looks at schizophrenia and how it is perceived to the common human is amazing. Peter Greene (THE MASK, PULP FICTION) gives a good performance. The use of sound is excellent. But I don't know if I would want to watch it again.

Luke A (us) wrote: When I started this movie, I was expecting schlock. I ended up getting a legitimately engaging movie. The special effects aren't spectacular, but it seemed to me the filmmakers were doing the best they could with the budget they had. It might only be because I had such low expectations going in, but I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking for a fairly entertaining low budget sci fi movie. It doesn't spell everything out for you but by the end I had a fairly good idea of what happened, but if vagueness bothers you I wouldn't recommend this for you. Otherwise give it a shot. Also Rotten tomatoes says this came out in 2001 but everything else I've seen says it came out in 1980

David B (it) wrote: Before he made his mainstream films, Spielberg directed this clunker. Family move into old farmhouse and all kinds of stuff starts to happen. Low budget trash with a few signs of Spielberg's abilities behind the camera. Sandy Dennis her usual annoying self playing to type. This has all the signs of what was to come.....in particular it is reminiscent of Poltergeist which he did not direct. Awful!

peter h (mx) wrote: its one muddled mess of a film its an italian horror , set in england thats been dubed into english, confuised? so am I. the plot line has got so many bloodly plot twists its more twisted than a phone cord. the theme tune and titles ( yes the version i have seen has its altanite tilte Ghoul in school right under werewolf in a girls dormitory) are so campy that it cause a huge contrast with the serious tone of the film. 4/10 the bad dubbing , campy theme song and stupid title ruined what could of been an above average were wolf movie.
