This is the second part of a projected three-part epic biopic of Russian Czar Ivan Grozny, undertaken by Soviet film-maker Sergei Eisenstein at the behest of Josef Stalin. Production of the epic was stopped before the third part could be filmed, due to producer dissatisfaction with Eisenstein's introducing forbidden experimental filming techniques into the material, more evident in this part than the first part. As it was, this second part was banned from showings until after the deaths of both Eisenstein and Stalin, and a change of attitude by the subsequent heads of the Soviet government. In this part, as Ivan the Terrible attempts to consolidate his power by establishing a personal army, his political rivals, the Russian boyars, plot to assassinate him.

Josh G (jp) wrote: Long, boring movie. It can be said that the parts with the quote-unquote "ghost son" are pretty tense, although that may also be due to the fact that I watched the movie alone and in the dark, so even your standard something-jumps-out-at-the-camera-with-a-rise-in-the-music was kind of startling me. You are plunged into a relationship between the woman and her husband and expected to believe that they love each other. I never once believed that. There's really not much else I need to say. I should have rented Eastern Promises.

Louise B (br) wrote: This was a little hokey at times but it is adapted from a stage play and that occasionally happens. The scene where William Holden and Kim Novak dance at the picnic is the one to watch for. With the Chinese lanterns reflecting in the lake at dusk and one of the most beautiful actresses of that in her prime. Since it was actually filmed in the midwest it makes it all the more authentic feeling. Ben Mankiewicz, the day host on TCM, said that William Holden is actually a terrible dancer in real life and the dance scene was filmed with the cinematographer circling around he and Kim Novak. He also added that he stepped on her feet a few times. I just thought that was a funny bit of information!! This is a great love story and if you haven't seen it you should!

Mike M (ru) wrote: Incredible cinematography and a cast of colorful characters await viewers of this underrated Eastwood-helmed spy thriller, including one of the most unique and memorable albinos (!) ever to grace the screen. Clint plays an assassin who, despite his best intentions, gets lured back into the life he wants to leave behind. Shot on locations high above where any mortal man should dare tread (let alone to simply shoot a movie) The Eiger Sanction will leave most viewers guessing until the very end - not to mention a tad dizzy from all the spectacular heights. Well-written with just enough humor to not derail the drama.
