Ella R (it) wrote: I couldn't even get all the way through it. The dialogue could have been written in 15 minutes by a wannabe gangsta 13 year old, but on the plus side, the quality of the production was so poor that a lot of the diabolical dialogue was inaudible. Every character was a cliche, from the hard ass/faced female DA who wears a ton of make up and tries to intimidate the chief of police by calling him a "nitwit" to the FBI "maveric" who just wanders around pointing and shouting at people. My favourite cringworthy effort was the touching flasback to the "local good guy detective (who is predictably in love with his "beautiful yet tough" female partner)as a teen, when he wanted to start dealing to buy some sneakers. He goes to visit the local drugs lord (who, predictably, was dressed like a pimp and held all his meetings in the back of the car), bat rather than welcoming a new drug runner - the drugs lord says "hell no - you be a football player and I'll pay you for every touchdown" and then gives him the sneakers he wanted! RIDICULOUSLY BAD! I tried to find some comedic value in its awfulness, but there was none to be had - especially in the chief of police who, I think, was meant to be funny with his crazy obsession for food over everything else. This film is truly awful.

Tim C (mx) wrote: I couldn't believe this film was made in 1949 when I finished watching it. It attempts to take on a controversial subject films at the time rarely showed, race in America. Elia Kazan, the same director of "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "On The Waterfront", doesn't hold much back in showing some realities of racism in America and the American South. Jeanne Crain plays a woman of mixed race who is coming to terms with her heritage, Ethel Waters is her endearing grandmother who is a silent challenge to the then roles available for African American women back then. Ethel Barrymore is the older woman Crain cares for out of job obligation( she's her nurse) and friend to Waters. Barrymore passes away, and a court case ensues. I can't reveal the ending, but it is a surprise, especially for the time period. I believe Ethel Waters got a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in this film, making her the second African American woman nominated for an Oscar.
John A (ag) wrote: After An Excellent Opening Act, A Pretty Decent Second Act, This Is A Great Final Act, In A Three Film Story Arc. To View This Film Is Like Watching Something Completely Different, It Never Actually Looks Like A Star Trek Movie For The Most Part. This Was Made On A Lighter Subject On Purpose After The Slightly Dark Themes Portrayed In The Previous Instalments. This Is The Closest To A Comedy You'll Find In The Star Trek Universe And It Works Extremely Well, This Once Again Showcases The Directorial Talents Of Actor Leonard Nimoy.
