Just Between Us
Nikola is a man who knows how to really enjoy life; he's even able to rouse sympathy for his sinful ways. His brother turns a blind eye to his philandering although, with a broken marriage behind him, he doesn't have a clear conscience, either. Is there anything positive to be said about infidelity, or does it simply deserve the utmost contempt, particularly when it's more premeditated than spontaneous?

(jp) wrote: A brilliant and highly memorable martial arts fantasy film saddled with an extraneous and tonally mismatched epilogue. There's a specific point where the story reaches its climax and should have ended. Instead there's an additional plot arc that feels more like an undercooked sequel than a proper finish. Imagine if Back To The Future actually showed the entire sequence (from Part II) of Marty and Jennifer saving their kids at the end instead of just playfully setting up the idea of further adventures. Cut the last bit and it's a near-perfect film.

(jp) wrote: A monumental Italian epic, to be celebrated for it's cinematography and gigantic scope, if nothing else. Better dialogue and a polished focus on the politics would place this among the greatest films of all-time, but at points Bertolucci settles for cariactures and mild allegories for communism and fascism. At five hours long it's best to view each act in a separate sitting, which helps the audience soak in the story and study the history. It's bolstered by another terrific Morricone score.

(es) wrote: Michael Collins is a solid film with a great performance by Liam Neeson. The story can be very interesting, with some emotionally effective scenes and some intense action sequences. The ending works, though it's nothing we haven't seen. And that right there has to be my main complaint, this movie didn't try anything new. Clearly influenced by the much better film Braveheart from a year ago, this film hits all of the same beats. It is a good and pretty compelling film, but I could predict exactly how it was going to turn out. This film also suffers from some pacing issues and uninspired writing. So the story is good, but it copies on the success of the recent best picture winner but never quite reaches its full potential. A good yet forgettable film that benefits from some thrilling war scenes and some good performances.
