Lauren B (ag) wrote: This was an okay movie. I thought the story line was a little bit clich and I wished that John Cussak was in it more. However, it's intriguing enough to keep you plugged in and Elijah Wood did a very nice job.

Trouble B (au) wrote: Feels like a rather pointless use of over 2 hours. Drags a lot and the character development is a bit thin on the ground.

And, as is her gift Holofcener creates a number of potently observed human interactions that are both painful and funny. As much as I enjoyed it, I can easily understand why someone else might not.

He abuses his power and connections to get off, even though he was likely drunk and generally at fault. The victim's family puts a curse on him, which he subsequently blames his wife for, since she was giving him the blowjob when he hit the woman. In the end, he gleefully kills his wife and a family doctor whom he suspects his wife had been cheating with, even though he had no evidence to support the theory. This, after also employing a friend to terrorize and kill more of the original victim's family and friends.

As the film progresses they are slowly wittled down as the battle to take the hill intensifies. The action scenes are short and sharp and that allows time to meet and fall for the characters in the lulls in the battle. Hugely recommended.

Ben S (mx) wrote: A straightforward war-time movie about Motor Torpedo Boats based in the Phillipines at the start of WW2 is given the John Ford treatment and becomes something more. The film is patriotic to be sure but the characters are not cliched and there is a real attempt for authenticity. There are some great visual touches as well. Robert Montgomery and John Wayne are both solid in the main roles and Donna Reed is effective as a dedicated nurse. Well worth a look.
