(ag) wrote: It's...not that bad.Yes, it's over-the-top like crazy and it is the longest two hours I have spent, but otherwise, it's a pretty nice offering from Paramount with a few in-jokes pertaining to their 1930s identity (everything is white and melodramatic) and Faye Dunaway having a ball as the proto-Tenenbaum Joan Crawford. I didn't appreciate that a woman could write an entire tell-all because her mother walked the really fine line between tiger mother and abusive egomaniac sociopath (and trust me, Joan's lost her balance a lot throughout her life) and because her mother didn't want to spoil her (but showered her with gifts - talk about missing the point), but then again, if you can make one of the greatest actresses of all time shriek about their hate for coat hangers and subsequently wreak havoc all over a bathroom, you make me want to watch. So, we've got your standard biopic about Christine Crawford, who isn't the greatest kid ever, but whose mother tends to be self-absorbed. Well, raising a family is tough, but Christine gets the worst of it. Yes, Joan abuses her and it's not pleasant to watch at all. But look at how Faye completely turns Joan from somebody we can relate to (stressed mother) to a villain more egotistical than that guy who killed Bambi's mother! That takes talent, folks. So, I have to agree with John Waters on this - it's just a bland biopic. Nothing new to put on the table, save for some really unnecessary camp. So, yeah - don't watch it unless if you're really sadistic and would prefer this to the much quicker paced (but still the same length) "The Social Network."Now that I think about it, I think I appreciate that Facebook movie a lot more now.by the way, it's still not a funny movie. when you realize that Crawford was that insane in real life (read her quotes and watch her interviews - she knows no subtlety), the camp stops. I mean, you still have "don't fuck with me fellas" and "no wire hangers," but two crazy lines do not make a camp classic.

(ca) wrote: Bing Crosby stars as an unconventional priest sent to a failing parish in order to turn it around. It's a 2-hour schmaltz-fest directed by Leo McCarey, but I think it had it's moments...and I've never been one to discount the value of a little schmaltz. Crosby is fine in the role, but it is really amazing to me that this won Best Picture, Best Director, AND Best Actor. I mean it's decent, but it isn't really THAT good. It's classic Hollywood though, and for that I'd recommend it.
