Christopher Z (ca) wrote: The first trek film has one of the most interesting stories in the series. I like the idea of this space probe developing a life of it own and desiring to learn and know its creator or God. The 2001 director's cut is a huge improvement, especially with editing and special effects. It also dated better than its sequels. The 2001 edition looks like it could have been made today, while the sequels have an 80s feel to them.
Brandon S (mx) wrote: The most impressive feat of this film? The transitions in tone. Ingmar Bergman moves from the dark and dreary tone of the Professor's first dream; meditating on how he is unwilling to deal with the inevitable end of his life, to a jaunty and quite hilarious exchange with his lovely housekeeper, played marvelously by Jullan Kindahl. This is a fantastic film with a lot to say, even if it not all of it comes across as prominently as others. Victor Sjstrm delivers the performance of a lifetime, and Ingmar Bergman directs this film with fine and precise direction. Masterful storytelling from top-to-bottom.
Mau R (ag) wrote: When one sees a movie as old as this one, one expects something out of the normal that makes it worth seeing it. That didnt happen with Bicycle thieves. Realistic with sense of art, it left me the same at the end of the movie as I was at the beginning. For others like me, it could be a waste of time.

Jonny C (ag) wrote: Good satire of the 80's US school system. Nick Nolte leads a great cast, which includes a young Laura Dern, and the Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio. Being a teacher I could sympathise with the characters lack of motivation, and the points the writers tried to stress, are as relevant today as they were 20 years ago.
