Tom M (kr) wrote: This movie was made by a couple of neophyte filmmakers, young well-meaning Jewish kids who had spent some time in the South and wanted to testify about the daily indignities of black life in an openly racist society. It stars an actor best known for his role in "Hogan's Heroes." So what do you expect? Earnest, preachy, clunky, dated, embarrassing. Part of what makes this film wonderful is how it defies expectations. The action and characters are surprisingly well-observed, the story surprisingly nuanced (it isn't ALL about race). It's respectful without being reverent, hard-hitting without being sensationalistic. Not worth seeking out as a historical artifiact... just worth seeking out, period.
Mellow Yellow (jp) wrote: Pretty much the only factual thing in this movie was John Dillinger's name. Some of these descrepincies can be attributed to the fact that this was released in 1945 just 11 years after JD died so some errors are forgivable but they make John out to be a trigger happy murderer when in reality he was always hesitent about the use of his weapons. None of the Dillinger gang---Pierpont, Mackley, Van Meter, Billie Frechette or even Louis Piquett is represented. Instead they made up a different cast. They show dillinger robbing things like trains, jewelers and restaurants when he did nothing of the kind. They also show him during the Little Bohemia incident murdering Emil Wanatka and his wife even though they were both alive and well afterwards. Complete crap.
Vicky L (ca) wrote: Stunning art direction, impressive performance, subtle camera movement, these holds the necessary parts of a good film, but cannot hind a pale and thin story. The director tries to use the simple plot to convey something deeper, which can be detected from some detail constructions: e.g. when the elder maid talks about the maid being portrayed with the patron, she brutally wipes the chicken with butter, inferring man's touch on woman's body. This film is subtle and contained, but resulting in an affected feeling.
