Don S (fr) wrote: Totally unbelievable story featuring one of my favorite actors, Bruce Willis, and Henry Cavill in an action thriller that was better than I imagined it would be. Willis plays a business consultant on holiday in Spain with his family. Cavill, who plays one of Willis' sons, goes to town in a huff and finds his family has disappeared from their sailboat and the boat has been hidden. Turns out there is more to dear old dad than meets the eye, and during the course of the revelation he is shot and killed, Now Cavill must find out who killed his dad and why in order to rescue his family. Pretty decent.

Every time I'd considered putting it on, something had happened to stop me. Call it fate, call it coincidence, call it some shade of luck - something had stopped me. Until now. I will summarise the film first, in neutral terms - A group of psychic investigators are invited to cleanse a notorious haunted house by its reclusive wealthy owner. Many previous teams have tried and failed, at his behest (the trying, not the failure) - but this team is hopeful of success because of their newest member - a young woman with unusually powerful clairvoyant abilities. The house's owner warns them that some of the manifestations of the spirit that infests the house have been remarkably harsh - perhaps worse than they might have had to deal with before. It's a bit like Most Haunted. Something else that I knew about it, that the casual viewer might not be privvy to, was that it was a low-budget horrorific splat-fest, from a production team previously known for ridiculous soft-core porn - titles including The Lord of the G-Strings: The Femaleship of the String and The Sexy Sixth Sense. Undeterred (like a fool), I continued. The film is officially 89 minutes long, and yet somehow watching it took about four hours. I cannot understand this at all - unless it is some insidious effect of the spiritual manifestations. Or because time seems to dilate and expand when under the influence of massive levels of tedium. Flesh For The Beast is terribly, indescribably, dull. The house is inhabited by a group of irresistibly sexy, wanton succubi - female demons who prey on idiotic men through manipulating their helpless sexual desires. The house's owner is in league with these evil creatures, providing group after group of psychics for them to feed on, under the pretence of ridding the house of its haunting. Oh, that's a spoiler. So is this: the young psychic girl is one of these she-demons too! So, you make a low-budget horror film about irresistibly sexy devil women. You need them to seduce male characters and then rend them to giblets and bits. I suggest that you might not simply choose the first actresses prepared to get their fannies out and play in fake blood. Perhaps you might want to be patient during casting, and see if you could audition some actresses who were actually attractive. And if not attractive, at least not weirdly unpleasant-looking. These evil women were annoying and unappealing. And preposterously, somehow became even less enticing once they'd thrown off their clothes to display the butcher's window to the hapless blokes. Really horrible. Perhaps that's a little unfair to criticize? Well, this isn't: Flesh For The Beast is badly-scripted, badly-shot, badly-edited, badly-lit, badly-acted, hopelessly dreary, non-frightening, ugly, irritating and just hard to watch. There is a lot of blood and gore on display, but to be honest with you, by the time it really started spraying across the screen I was deep into fast-forward territory. Otherwise I feared the rotten film might simply never end. Ever. Some truly bizarre scenes caused me to resume normal-speed playback on occasion though. Including one almost-indescribable sequence of naked ugly women with horrible tits carousing in the entrails and bits of some slain victims. It looked exactly how a video for the 80s rock band Heart would have looked, if they'd released a single called "I can't wait to repeatedly rub your spilled guts all up my tits." Exactly like that. This film is useless. Please don't watch it, anybody. Proper shit. The only rating appropriate is: 2

Bill M (kr) wrote: A beautiful, loving and epic rebrth of the son of krypton, this is an exciting warm and romantic epic. It's now ten years since it's strange reception where it made 400 million worldwide but was after a while labelled as not just a disappointment but an out and out flop, and it also saw extremely strong reviews but was somehow mass labelled by the smaller percentage of bad reviews and on top of that saw a pretty muted audience response, and in those ten years it's reputation seems to have just continued to slide, indeed it seems the only following it really has is of people who fucking hate it (save that hatred for Zack Snyder's ultra pessimistic, gloomy misunderstanding of the character please people) Im not sure, even now where the hate is directed exactly, i mean sure some of the criticisms hold water, he does seem to mostly just lift increasingly heavy and massive things up, Kate Bosworth is too young to be Lois Lane, Lex Luthors plot is nonsensical and it is sometimes a little too reverent of the Richard Donner/Lester movie (whole lines are repeated, and sometimes there are element's of an outright remake here) but Returns is just a damn beautiful piece of work, it has a love for the man of steel that is warm and infectious, there is a sense of awe and wonder that usually only Spielberg can inject into his films. It's also really romantic, magical, sweet, often very funny, and the action sequences are huge and incredibly realized (the plane scene is one of the best set pieces of the noughties, and the bullet in Supermans eye is the single best visual representation of the characters indestructibility ever, also it's fucking badass!) there's also this sad, melenchnoic feel to the film that makes it unique among Superman films and superhero films overall, this films portrayal of Superman as a lost and lonely soul whose adopted world has moved on without him is fascinating, bold and affecting. Also Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor is a wicked delight, a far more malicious, nasty version of the character than we've seen before or since that the actor makes his own, he eats up scenes with infectious gusto, and may well be the best iteration of Supes main antagonist ever seen. Speaking of casting the performance of Brandon Routh as Superman deserves the uttermost respect and reverence, he is the best version of the character outside of Chris Reeve's definitive screen portrayal, he brings a gravitas and powerful presence, plus sense of warmth, likability and fine comic timing in his scenes as Clark Kent. Superman Returns deserves a reappraisal now, especially in the light of so many plain, samey, workmanlike modern superhero films lacking any sense of wonder, it grows ever more special. One of the greatest superhero films ever made. Magnificent.

Graham B (nl) wrote: Okay so this franchise based on a SHORT story by Stephen King reaches number 5 (oh, but there's more.) In this film a couple of groups of teenagers are heading into deepest darkest corn backwoods to spread some ashes of a recently deceased friend. The two directing the journey with the help of blow-up sex doll road markers, meet a decidedly stabby end and the other car ends up stranded in a COTC type smalltown complete with evil kid and his murderous followers.I am a firm believer that this film is a tongue in cheek parody of this silly franchise. I laughed out loud many a time and I believe I was laughing with the film maker. Stupid story with so many cliched tropes thrown at the screen. It isn't a recommendation by any means, but I had some fun.
