Brett S (gb) wrote: Don't believe the "top critics." Worth the time to watch if you have the ability to leave your pre-conceived notions behind and judge this film standing alone. The critics judge this film against the books (that appear to be quite popular and well-written) rather than film itself. I admit I did not read all of the critics comments, but, one common thread was that the film was unworthy of praise because it promotes kids not wearing seat belts and, of all things, eating candy!! The critics compare it to other films and tv shows, but that easily falls into the apples vs. oranges category. Its worse sin, however, is that . . . gasp . . . it won't appeal to adults. WTF?!! I know going in its a kids movie and only so may Toy Stories come along once in a blue moon. So, what are the merits of this film? It is well written, acted and directed. The underlying big foot plot and the main plot compete quite nicely. The characters are stock, but so what, they work well together. Heather Graham's character is nothing we haven't seen before but she brings energy to the role.I watched it with my 3 year old daughter and while she laughed only at the more obvious comic episodes, I found myself laughing out loud at some of the more subtle set ups. The film's pacing was refreshingly quick and appropriate.

Charles R (jp) wrote: Because us horror fans need an epic, Lord of the Rings like, saga too. Most coherence is lost in translation, but what that transforms it into is a unique, dizzyingly gonzo way to tell a familiar story. If you go in jaded, it's easy to rip this film apart....but if you just want to be thrilled and mesmerized, and are sick of the way standard american blockbusters go about doing so (even the good ones!), this should please you.

Johnny T (de) wrote: A pretty easy ride, almost entirely because of John Candy and the miraculous casting of Maureen O'Hara. The performances are delightfully true and never descend into bathos or cheap sentiment. Orchestrates a peaceful stream of gags and one-liners while piecing together a puzzle of broken hearts...one of Columbus's best films, and easily ranks as Candy's most dimensional performance. He's a joy to watch here. Only the Lonely might be predictable and incredibly reserved considering Candy is the lead, but it never resorts to bathos and is hardly desperate to tug at our heart strings. Columbus, who already had Gremlins and The Goonies under his belt as a screenwriter conveys his strengths here at crafting dialogue that is humorous and touching but not cheaply sentimental. It comes as no surprise that the actor does a nice job with the film's light-hearted moments, but Candy handles the more serious aspects of Chris Columbus' screenplay with apparent ease - turning his character into an utterly believable and sympathetic person. As a romance, Only the Lonely undoubtedly succeeds. Anchored by the three lead's captivating performances, the film is heartwarming and poignant; as a result. VERDICT: "High-Quality Stuff" - [Positive Reaction] This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent. (Films that are rated 3.5 or 4 stars)
Ashley H (jp) wrote: High Spirits is a decent film. It is about when Peter Plunkett's Irish castle turned hotel is about to be repossesed, he decides to spice up the attraction a bit for the 'Yanks' by having his staff pretend to haunt the castle. Peter O'Toole and Steve Guttenberg give performances. The script is enjoyable but a little slow in places. Neil Jordan did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor.
Adam R (mx) wrote: A quirky Disney film that is carried by a superb performance from Margot Kidder. It's an interesting blend of comedy, romance and mystery. Definitely better than it is given credit for. (First and only full viewing - Sometime in 2011)
Jeffrey B (br) wrote: a fun, campy, 70s take on time travel. Haven't read the original Kurt Vonnegut novel (gasp...sorry bookworms!) to tell if it lives up to the original source material but, definitely a fun Sunday couch-day flick.
John O (br) wrote: An interesting documentary about a film being filmed. Very improvisational, the director is never really knows what he's doing and leaves the crew to kind of make the movie on their own. I'd say it's worth watching for anyone looking for a career in film.
Francisco L (br) wrote: The great, excellent, amazing, legendary performances, by Dick Van Dyke and by Julie Andrews, hide the apathetic performances by Matthew Garber and Karen Dotrice. One fact is that in an animation or kids movie, the weak script and the poor approach of the theme are insignificant and only what matters are the sweet songs, the charming story, the creativity and the originality of this movie. Little boring narrative.
