Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India

Lagaan tells the tale of the Indian village Champaner, beset by drought and British colonialism in the year 1893. Without a drop of rain in months, the worried villagers of Champaner decide to ask the local authorities for a temporary repeal of their taxes -- the hated lagaan. Led by the heroic Bhuvan (Indian superstar Aamir Khan) they bring their plight to the military governor, Captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne). But the sadistic Russell threatens to raise the lagaan threefold, unless the villagers can beat his men at a game of cricket, in which case he'll lift taxes on the entire province for a period of three years. Bhuvan accepts the challenge, but there's a problem -- no one in Champaner knows how to play cricket. A band of misfits come to the rescue, coached by Russell's soft-hearted sister Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley), and the race is on to be ready in three months' time. An epic reworking of Victory with eye-popping song-and-dance routines.

The people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers... . You can read more in Google, Youtube, Wiki

It doesn't care that it was all filmed in one room. It doesn't care about writing or strong acting. It doesn't care about any of that. And that's probably its strongest aspect. It KNOWS what it is. It understands itself. It knows it won't be an oscar-winning movie, or break the mold, or do anything groundbreaking. And in that, its free to have every bit of fun with itself. And that's what makes it awesome. Romance subplot with a socially defunct doctor from hell? Sure. Claymation? Go for it! A training montage? Straight out of the 80's! One-liners? You bet your cybernetic posterior.I can't honestly hate this movie when it goes so far as to hire out the voice actor of RYU from Street Fighter to dub over the martial artist named "#1 Man". That's ontop of all his Dragon Ball Z work. It's just too awesome.

Daniel T (es) wrote: This film certainly is one of the more classic films of its particular genre. It is really how Jet Li got put on the map, and watching it leaves no mystery why this is the case. I'd tell you that if you've seen and enjoyed any of Jet Li's Chinese films that you absolutely should see this. But if you are, you probably have.

jeroen v (ag) wrote: a particularly bad American rom com with Kutcher at his untalented worst. First sin of any bad comedy: Failing to be funny. Just Married delivers on that one, no problem. Second sin: Badly drawn characters and unsympathetic ones at that. Kutcher needs shooting for overacting, Murphy is supposed to be a rich educated culture snob, but is more like a pool hall floozy and a Courtney Love clone. On top of that the film opens up drawers of clichs about Europe that are so crinch-worthy they'll make your shoes curl up. A thoroughly, solidly bad movie.

Tim W (us) wrote: Quite good, but not great. It was quick, slick, and kept my interest the whole time. Even the cliche's and stupidities of the movie are masked by how entertaining it was. Forgettable though.

Jonathan B (jp) wrote: **Just a mesmerising and brutal the second time around, Blu-Ray transfer is lovely too**A brooding, intense and often violent drama. Based on a simple premise, Guy Pearce's car gets nicked by a gang of crooks and he goes after them, all set against a post apocalyptic (or post collapse) back drop. Very well acted by Pearce and Pattinson, It occasionally slips into genre territory, before taking a turn in the opposite direction. A polar opposite to the dense and multilayered crime drama of Michod's debut 'Animal Kingdom', The Rover confirms that Michod is a strong talent.
