Leap of Faith
Jonas Nightengale is a fraudulent Christian faith healer who makes a living travelling around America holding revival meetings and conducting 'miracles' with the help of his friend and manager, Jane, and their entourage. One of their trucks breaks down in Rustwater, a town in desperate need of rain to save their crops. While waiting for spare parts, Jonas decides to hold a revival meeting in the town. The local sheriff, Will Braverman, is skeptical and tries to prevent his town and its people from being conned. However a local disabled boy, Boyd, believes Jonas could make him walk again. Events in Rustwater make Jonas examine his own faith and doubts.

(gb) wrote: An outrageous and repellent exercise in bad taste whose only infantile objective is to leave you disgusted as if eating dog shit yourself. It isn't funny, the acting is horrible and John Waters only proves that he is an awful director with his trashy zooms and ugly camera movements.
(fr) wrote: There's much to admire in this movie. Unfortunately, I think the movie also bites off more than it can chew. We come to love Morgan and we want Leonie to get back together with him and dump that pompous new boyfriend/husband. But should we? Morgan is clearly dangerous and needs help. Leonie all too often acts as an enabler and this movie wants us to cheer her for it. We should commend this film for its up-to-date attitudes on mental health for the time, but those attitudes are very outdated today, and watching the movie can be an uncomfortable experience for someone with knowledge of mental illness. Regardless, David Warner gives one of his finest performances, and Vanessa Redgrave was rightfully nominated as Leonie.
(us) wrote: Relased smack dab in the middle of the Sean Connery James Bond rage, this pitch black study of the last days of an aging spy sunk like a stone at the box office. In the last few years, it's had a (sort of) revival and people are starting to notice Ritt's stark direction and Burton's masterful perfomance. It's a perfectly gloomy spy film that's not easily forgotten.
