(ru) wrote: Solid old-fashioned action from Dante Lam with an unusually strong character development, unusual even for Lam, that is. The extreme focus on character demands some pretty advanced acting skills, which The Stool Pigeon provides throughout. Most notably so, needless to point out, in Nick Cheung's stellar performance, practically turning this movie into a one man show. The complexity and moral ambiguity of the characters diverts the attention from the action sequences, which, although sparser than in The Beast Stalker, comes in steady bursts and are equally masterfully executed by Chin Kar-Lok. After a few years of quite forgettable and average filmmaking, Dante Lam has developed into one of Hong Kong's most reliable directors, quietly moving away from the action genre and perhaps into something grander and more challenging. Let's hope he continues this winning streak.
