Life Is Sweet
Just north of London live Wendy, Andy, and their twenty-something twins, Natalie and Nicola. Wendy clerks in a shop, leads aerobics at a primary school, jokes like a vaudevillian, agrees to waitress at a friend's new restaurant and dotes on Andy, a cook who forever puts off home remodeling projects, and with a drunken friend, buys a broken down lunch wagon. Natalie, with short neat hair and a snappy, droll manner, is a plumber; she has a holiday planned in America, but little else. Last is Nicola, odd man out: a snarl, big glasses, cigarette, mussed hair, jittery fingers, bulimic, jobless, and unhappy. How they interact and play out family conflict and love is the film's subject.

Beside the very obvious and oh so expected 20 year age gap between jennifer garner and kevin costner as lovers I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The deals behinds the scence and the bravado personalities if some agents and players was really interesting
(fr) wrote: Quite a funny story but one which I am very surprised has made the oscar shortlist. There a lots of European comedies like this made every year and most are ignored. This is no better than most and, I'd say, a bit lower than the standard of films I've come to expect from Sweden and Scandinavia in general.

This could have been something really special but Gordon's insistence on squeezing every last bit of sentimentality from every scene makes the whole film seem disingenuous and contrived.

(ru) wrote: an indepth story adds to the interest, to put it another way, it's one of those movies you always ask, what the fuck is going to happen next. Interesting soundtrack but most of all excellent individual characters played so well by a cast of real British talent, oh yes, and Penelope Cruz, yes, at last a part she so deserves and what a body! Really strange, quirky but watchable!

(ca) wrote: So bad it is still entertaining. You got to hear the goofy inspector's voice. He sounds like a cross with Mr. Magoo and the penguin from Batman. And of course there is the Adam West. Kind of a fun movie to watch, but for all the wrong reasons.

When their shenanigans accidentally kill the family of a trucker, he uses his monster truck pet project to seek revenge. The flick has a lot of corny moments (the monster truck seems to have a stealth mode, allowing it to appear roaring out of nowhere, it's hilarious), but I really dug the flick from start to finish, well worth a look.Give it a rental.
(it) wrote: as far as i'm concerned, anyone who praises this film as being "comedic gold" is only saying that because they want to seem well educated in cinema. when it comes to slapshtick silent comedies that pass the test of time, "steamboat bill, jr." is not one of them, and buster keaton is a far cry from being as brilliant as the likes of charlie chaplin. in the film's 66 minute running time, i laughed once, and it was a very tiny one at that.
