(br) wrote: Ferris Bueller's Day OffHigh school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) just wants a day off from school and will go to extremes to make that happen. Ferris is the quintessential popular kid who seems to always get what he wants. He is hedonistic, charming, smart, and consistently does two things to manipulate others: first, he tells people what they want to hear, and second, he makes and carries out elaborate plans to trick them. Ferris begins this day by making his parents believe that he is sick. This is something to which everyone can relate. Ferris, however, takes it to the next level by making a contraption that will snore when his bedroom door is opened. This way, if his mom checks on him, she will think he is sound asleep. This is only one of several schemes that he puts in motion to make others believe he is home sick. After his family leaves the house he invites some friends to join him. He convinces his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck), who is a hypochondriac, to get out of bed and join him for the day. Ferris then concocts a plan to get his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) out of school. This is accomplished with a phone call to the school's dean of students claiming there has been a death in her family. Sloane is a pretty girl that would never miss an opportunity to spend a day away from school with Ferris. He then convinces Cameron to take Cameron's dad's stunning red Ferrari so they can travel to downtown Chicago in style. After the three friends arrive in downtown Chicago, they park the precious vehicle in a garage and begin their adventures. They experience fine dining, professional baseball, and an art museum. Ferris even sings in a parade. While all of this is taking place, Ferris's jealous sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), who knows that he is faking, is doing whatever it takes to make sure Ferris is caught and exposed as the lying faker that he is. The dean of students at the school is also onto Ferris and will go to extremes to make sure Ferris gets to enjoy a fifth year of high school. This day off from school is not just fun and games. The audience really gets to see the development of Cameron's character. He is transformed by the end of the day. Plus, the movie utilizes a style of acting in which the fourth wall is broken. In other words, Ferris looks right at the camera and talks directly to the audience. There is no separation, or wall, between the actor and audience. This helps you feel like you are friends with Ferris Bueller and that you too are enjoying the day off with him, Cameron and Sloane.Overall the movie is lighthearted and enjoyable to watch. As stated by Ferris Bueller himself, " Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it."
