Guido S (ag) wrote: Seeing as it is 2013, figured I would watch 1997's view of 2013. A while has passed since the apocalypse. society has mostly crumbled into small communities which are at war with one another and generally keep to themselves. Kevin Costner is a travelling performer doing Shakespeare plays with his horse for goods. He gets captured by a group of rebels who want nothing but to make sure the US as it used to exist is wiped off the planet. He escapes and later finds a postal van and steals the uniform as a way to keep travelling as a 'Postman'. He gets the support of Larenz Tate who wants to do something different. While Costner had no true intentions of creating a new mail system, Tate believes and recruits more mail people. Eventually the bandits find out and the two go at war, and this ends about as you expect it would. Since this was universally panned when it came out, I didn't get around to seeing it till now. It is interesting to see an apocalyptic film that isn't all doom and gloom. However, this film is incredibly long. There are lot of musical numbers and dancing which could have been cut. Considering this came out around the time of Braveheart and soon Patriot which are superior and follow the same chest beating flag waving action. If this was cut down a bit, the script tightened up a bit to not make it so ridiculously sappy, it might have been ok. Otherwise, this is a bloated film that could have been so much more with a better vision.

Michael S (gb) wrote: Tim Burton stab at adapting the classic Roald Dahl book is overproduced and largely flat. The omission of Gene Wilder's classic "You get nothing!" freak out from the original film is unforgivable. Johnny Depp's Wonka is creepy in a real off-putting way. My suggestion for a better Wonka: Jeff Goldblum.

Eric H (kr) wrote: DEAD RINGERS is one of the most intense and riveting psychological dramas ever made. It is the story of identical twin gynecologists who share everything, even women. When an aging temperamental actress comes between them, their descent into depression, drug abuse, and insanity ultimately has deadly consequences. DEAD RINGERS is simultaneously engrossing and painful to watch. The score by Howard Shore is beautiful and haunting, and Jeremy Irons' performance as the twins has to be seen to be believed. This is one of David Cronenberg's finest film.

Huw G (nl) wrote: Gets better towards the end, but there are no likable characters, and just who's really funny - the man at the top, who makes only a couple of fleeting appearances.
