Madeinusa is a girl aged 14 with a sweet Indian face who lives in an isolated village in the Cordillera Blanca Mountain range of Peru. This strange place is characterized by its religious fervor. From Good Friday at three o'clock in the afternoon (the time of day when Christ died on the cross) to Easter Sunday, the whole village can do whatever it feels like. During the two holy days sin does not exist: God is dead and can't see what is happening. Everything is accepted and allowed, without remorse. Year after year, Madeinusa and her sister Chale, and her father Don Cayo, the Mayor and local big shot, maintain this tradition without questioning it. However, everything changes with the arrival in the village of Salvador, a young geologist from Lima, who will unknowingly change the destiny of the girl.

Adele Exarchopolous is simply astonishing as the girl who transforms from hesitant teen through the full gamut of emotions, every one beautifully displayed across her face, in her eyes, in every movement. She is utterly compelling and her journey is often heartbreaking. Lea Seydoux is also great, which makes her dismal role in Spectre all the more disappointing.Much as I'd like to, I can't give the film 5*, because it made me feel more than a bit of voyeur more than once. It's shot in wonderful light and gorgeous closeups throughout. Scenes of the two leads kissing in the park with the sun behind them are as beautiful as anything I've seen for a long time. But we often watch Adele sleeping, barely clothed, for quite a while. Later in the film, when explicit sex is not part of the relationship, we watch her having a shower, for no apparent reason. It feels exploitative, it feels uncomfortable. It feels unnecessary and wrong. What a shame such a fabulously-acted story is tarnished...

Some of the plots easily get us to remember Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina in Fellini's La Strada. Great performances from Sean Penn and Samantha Morton.

The somewhat obvious motif of blue is both subtle and ubiquitous, while the simultaneously analytical and emotional use of music is beyond wonderful (swelling and going to black during her grieving). And Binoche...my Lord....we get nearly the entire emotional arc of the film simply through images of her beautifully pained face.
Brad G (kr) wrote: The film is too dry and drab at times, but it also has some really interesting bits peppered throughout. By 1992, James Spader had perfected his southern accent that he had struggled so hilariously with in the early days of The New Kids. His lustful Congressional hopeful is so bloody absurd in his actions (especially in that early Dojo scene) and I was frustrated that the story never let him do a proper investigation of the deaths at the center of the mystery. But?I kinda dig the subtle absurdity of not just his character but the other characters as well. Michael Parks as the slimy detective is fantastic and there is a courtroom shootout near the end that just blew my mind. Hell, it felt like it could of belonged in one of the nuttier episodes of Boston Legal. VF.

Lilia A (mx) wrote: This is yet another movie that I've heard raving reviews about, and was thoroughly disappointed.Bridge to Terabithia is innocent and cutsey. Two kids who are deprived of love from their parents and are bullied at school, create the fantasy world of Terabithia where they rule a kingdom. In order to watch this movie, you need some suspension of disbelief. Like why there aren't playground monitors...and why middle school kids are playing pretend. And the ending...yeah..it left me thinking "...really?"Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone, and would never watch it again.

Would rather listen to Alex Jones screaming about a libertarian than watch another minute of this god awful film. Wish I could give something a zero as this would be the first film I would give it to. Man.......Fuck Christians.
