Guimo P (ru) wrote: The Golden Dream is a modest yet powerful study of a sensational political issue. It foregoes back stories and talky scenes to give way to more time to depicting realities it wants to convey. Imageries are harrowing and combined with the courageous and heartfelt performance of its young casts, it successfully delivers its message.

Inspired by symbolist painters such as Beardsley, the film is a virtual visual feast. Notorious rockstar Kenji Sawada is a perfect fit as the somewhat scandalous real-life painter Yumeji Takehisa. A superb soundtrack by Shigeru Umebayashi.

Seagal shows off his mastery of Akido in multiple scenes to great satisfaction. The script is decent, but like aa lot of action films in the 80s, focus was placed on the pure action and ass kicking rather than a gripping story.
