(gb) wrote: I have had the pleasure to have read all of the Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories. They are classics. The bond that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote for Holmes and Watson is incredibly well done, and has been translated very well in the recent film adaptation of the characters. Then this film came along. "Young Sherlock Holmes" follows the (somewhat fan fiction) story of the first encounter between Holmes and Watson, and their first real crime. I say "fan fiction" because we are told in the beginning of the film that it isn't based on any previous story, and the first novel to feature Holmes and Watson has them meeting much later in life. That being said, this film is still enjoyable. The acting is good at times, with everyone bouncing between being good and being wooden. The writing isn't bad, either, it's just a tad convoluted when it comes to the final outcome. One scene in particular, a school yard challenge, ends in a way that is more luck based than anything that involves massive skills of deduction and reasoning. The effects, both visual and practical, are also very good, especially during the hallucination scenes. The action is also very good, specifically the sword fights that are presented with a precision and beauty that is barely found today. My only complaint is the beginning, which dragged for me. It felt a bit tedious. Unfortunately, this film never had a sequel, which is a shame for anyone who stayed during the credits to see a cliffhanger that would get any fan giddy. Not too along ago, though, Paramount announced that they are working on a reboot of this film, so hopefully it will be able to find a sequel in today's market. Overall, this was an enjoyable film and one that any fan of Sherlock Holmes should check out.

(de) wrote: 54%Saw this on 15/01/15Another Earth is not even half as compelling or intriguing as I Origins, well it's an improvement for director Mike Cahill, but sadly I saw the latter at first. If suddenly a planet( it doesn't have to another Earth) popped up in front of us that we could see it all day as big as what they show in the film's posters, everything would change, right from gravity, tides, climate, seasons, weather and we would totally be in a way towards extinction. However, the senseless Sci-fi film fails to even consider these facts and day by day the planet gets real damn close to Earth. That itself is a failure. Another Earth is passable or to the most mildly enjoyable as a drama film owing to the performance of it's leads especially Brit Marling, but as a sci-fi film it's an utter disappointment. It leaves too many questions unanswered and has a vaguely unexplained ending.
(ca) wrote: it ain't great but its a solid squeal the the 1978 classic well the film takes place in 1978 but the continuation is alright. This 1981 squeal has taken right after the events of the first same plot, same characters, same killer. However the film has good enough kills, haunting setting, and a good cast to make benefit from how its missing its info from the original 1978. First off SPOILER SPOILER Loomis shot Micheal 6 times in this he shot him 7 times! he even says it in this movie! Always trust the first. Next a good thing about it is today its an iconic setting for horror movies such as "The Ward" carpenter did later in his career and "Session 9" which was well presented. However it can be awkward at times the film is enjoyable and solid to its previous installment. 3 1/2 stars 73%
(fr) wrote: I've always loved this movie from the first time I saw it as a young girl. Bette Davis' mother's love angle is moving and the Glenn Ford's humorous obsession with luck goes from funny to making him a wreck. The characters are so classic you can't help but enjoy such a good movie. Long before sex, violence and lanquage over ran films...this is a winner.

(es) wrote: Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard each perform their roles thoroughly, but in the end there's too much waiting around in ths POW escape movie. It's got good action and I do love my Italian on-location shoots, but there won't be enough to make it too memorable.
