I'm a massive fan of Kang-ho Song (mainly thanks to Memories of Murder, but he's been in some top Korean cinema), but this buddy-thriller largely misfires after a promising opening sequence. I think I was expecting more of a tightly-wound thriller, so the odd-couple relationship that becomes the focus of the film just feels a bit daft. Not without its merits, but pretty forgettable.

Which some of you might be wondering what connection this movie has with "Die Hard". Well John McClane first made his debut on print in the novel "The Detective". That novel had a sequel called "Nothing Lasts Forever" that got adapted into the action classic "Die Hard" which makes "The Detective" the first time John McClane has ever appeared on screen and debatably makes this the first entry of the "Die Hard" series."The Detective" is about police detective Joe Leland investigation on the murder of a homosexual man. While investigating, he discovers links to official corruption in New York City in this drama that delves into a world of sex and drugs. The story does have some interesting aspects like Joe Leland love life and him exposing corruption in the police department. However, when Joe Leland does actual detective work is when the film becomes dull. Scenes are often drawn out and some character reiterate things we already know. The case itself is nothing too interesting either. There is a brilliant twist towards the end, but aside from that twist the actual crime solving aspect leaves something to be desired. The plot in general is so-so as the change in quality in certain part of the story is clearly visible.Frank Sinatra is technically the first actor to play John McClane since the sequel novel was adapted and Frank Sinatra was even offered to reprise his role in "Die Hard" at the age of 73. He's brings a Oscar worthy performance with his portrayal. He carries the entire film on his shoulder even making some of the unintentional comedic moments be possible to take seriously. The rest of the supporting actors are good too. The editing could have been better. Some scenes could have been left out and certain scenes should have occurred later in the movie instead sooner. "The Detective" is too long for its own good only being saved by strong acting. "The Detective" wasn't a good film debut for John McClane, but to be completely honest it wasn't a bad either. It was slightly above average.

The performances are all great, I really liked Ian Holm as Ash and of course Sigourney Weaver was great as well. Ridley Scott's direction is immaculate, and he really does a great job of making you feel the tension even when the alien isn't there at all. John Hurt is unfortunately underused, but before he dies he is at the center of the iconic chest burst scene, which is the stuff of legends. Alien sometimes gets a little slow for my taste, but once it gets going there is nearly nothing better than this film

Andrew H (br) wrote: This is an excellent western about loyalty, obsession and rivalry. It also has a great story and plenty of action. The action scenes are very good especially the climatic battle scene, which is well directed and shot. There is a range of characters make the film really interesting and make the story more enjoyable. The acting especially by Charlton Heston who plays the obsessive Major Dundee and Richard Harris as Dundee??s nemesis Captain Tyreen is excellent especially when the two have conflict on screen. There are a few good twists and turns to the story and the ending is somewhat unexpected. Overall a really enjoyable western with some great action scenes, great story and good characters which are equalled by the acting talent which plays them.

Other scenes seemed like straight-up action sequences. Cameron Diaz acted like she was in a comedy while Tom Cruise couldn't seem to decide whether to play it straight or for laughs. I think this is primarily a fault in direction more than in acting. The pacing and timing were uneven. Cruise and Diaz never really managed to create the chemistry that would make their relationship believable. The plot had multiple twists just for the sake of extending the story, which was too long for this type of film, whatever it was.

The enthralling 158 minutes of running time spans emotions from curiously clever forensic detail to a disgustingly justifiable graphic and harrowing rape scene without lagging.The Verdict: With a slick intensity, The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo English version holds a place in its own right amongst the Millennium mythology, congratulation's to a film maker who didn't feel the need to drown a great story with underlying cultural conventions.
