(es) wrote: Moody and somber flick tries to be a David Lynch style thriller when a group of eclectic characters come together at a seedy motel and dark pasts are brought to light and souls laid to bare. Mildy interesting at best and unlike the work of David Lynch, predictable. Seedy motel set movies are almost a sub genre on their own at this point.

So many other movies would have had a tired, predictable, cliche ending. The last scene in the movie is perfect and made me love the movie as a whole that much more.

Sadly, as an audience we are left with many of these questions unanswered. Quite how this film appeared on Roger Ebert's 'Great Movies' feature is one of my burning questions!Dark City is a visual treat and many of it's frames are clear homages to cinematic masters of the past. But while certainly heavy on style, this film crucially lacks in substance. Many of it's characters feel cartoonish in their simplicity and the plot ambles around without real direction, somehow managing to avoid the potential in the film's concept. The set up is great; the pay off... not so much.

Its a comic book movie, but one of the good ones. Look for the helicopter sequence, its a good 'un. Frances McDormand, what's she doing in here, but she does alright too.

I have no desire to talk to anyone who might be calling me.The beauty of indie flicks is most of the film's stars are genuinely talented or only the really talented ones do it. This was no exception-- great cast, interesting story and overall very satisfying ending. It was pretty good.
