But the partners soon learn that business and friendship don't mix. My Thoughts: "This was unfortunately a big stinker. The only reason I continued watching it was for Paul Giamatti. He is the only reason to sit through this film. His performance was funny, neurotic, and full of anger. But the film still ended up being a bore. Giamatti couldn't save it. The characters aren't very interesting (although Curtis is a bit of a nut) and neither is the story. I have that problem where you pick films to watch because there is an actor/actress in it you like or love without reading the story-line. Well unfortunately Paul Giamatti associated himself with this film. He is much better then this film. I am a fan of Paul Schneider, but this wasn't the best film for him to make his directorial debut. Hope he continues to direct, but just chooses a better film to do next time."

Kenneth L (us) wrote: This is the third film I've seen by Pedro Almodovar, and maybe the first to convince me that perhaps he really is a genius. This is one of those brilliant screenplays that comes along every once in a while that seems truly original and unique, while still telling a very moving and human story. This is one of the only foreign films to ever win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and it very well deserved it.The film follows four characters: two women who both end up in comas, and the two men who attend to them. Alicia (Leonor Watling), a ballet dancer, has been in a coma for four years following a car accident. Benigno (Javier Camara), a gentle but awkward and odd male nurse, has been faithfully taking care of her for years. Lydia (Rosario Flores)is a bold bullfighter who is trampled by a bull and ends up in a coma; Marco (Dario Grandinetti) is her boyfriend who doesn't really know what to do now. As the two women lie comatose, the two men start a tentative sort of friendship.I don't want to spoil the story at all, but suffice it to say that it takes a number of surprising turns. It also deals with extremely difficult, complicated moral questions with an incredibly fine sense of nuance and balance. It would have been easy to totally have this movie go the wrong way, but Almodovar pulls it off and makes it look easy. There are a couple of fun flights of fancy here (including a fictitious silent film within the film), but for the most part the film feels very grounded and believable, even as shocking things happen. This is a movie I would recommend very highly to just about anyone.

Jason J (ag) wrote: Two couples on holiday witness a satanic human sacrifice and have to go on the run when the satanists pursue them. This movie is a masterful exercise in suspense, paranoia and excitement as the horrified holiday-makers attempt to make it to the safety of civilisation, unable to trust anyone they meet along the way. The director slowly but surely crankes up the tension until the frantic action-packed final act in which our beleaguered friends are forced to fight back, with spectacular results. The only preposterous thing about the plot is we have to believe that everybody in the area is a satanist and is after the 2 couples! The cast are uniformly excellent, with Fonda and Oates ably playing the stoic and resourceful heroes, who cope manfully with everything from rattlesnakes in their camper van to all-out road war, whilst Marsh and Swit are totally convincing as their ineffectual wives who handle their predicament by screaming hysterically at every available opportunity. From the creepy-as-hell sacrifice scene to the unforgettable 'shock' ending, Race With The Devil is top-notch 70s movie-making and really deserves greater recognition than it currently seems to get. Recommended.
John O (au) wrote: Outstanding storyline and performances, depicting how an otherwise normal person having been emotional affected by war experiences, is unable to effective assimilate the behavior of his love interest. In the 50's, homosexuality and pedophilia are seen by most of the lay public as a morally evil possession by dangerous spirits. In love with Seberg, Beatty wants to be her knight in shining armor, unaware of the extent of what he was raised to see as unbridled depravity. As he desperately tries to understand her thinking, the logic of her mental processes become more acceptable to him. The conflict between his desire and his moral compass push him to the edge, showing the danger of any mental health professional becoming involved with his patient. Generally omitted from Warren's film resume, like Mickey One, but a very memorable movie. Especially, if you have been involved with someone under a doctor's care.
