(br) wrote: ts just kind of funny and weird, but unintentionally so. The all star cast scattered all around the picture are each in the film for different reasons, but all are doing what they can to add to the stylistic nature of the film. Ben Afflick seems to be aware that the film is a mess. Everybody else just gets into their own scenes hoping that it adds up to something good.

(jp) wrote: "You need some help homie?" Gritty, dark, dirty... A master piece of 1990s south central life in a Hollywood film. Personally, I give it a star ahead of Boyz in the Hood for its rough around the edges presentation and style. One of my all time favorites as an 80s and 90s product of society. Go see it!!! And if you have then see it again. Instant Classic!!!

(fr) wrote: What a great little surprise this was. A Russian horror film from the 60s! It's only 70 minutes but it's devilishly enchanting. The story of a monk and a witch has never been told with such charm, creepiness and whimsical mischief as it is here. The effects are beautiful and remind me of something out of a Cocteau film. It borrows elements from Haxan and some similarities to Kwaidan. Yet, there's a certain level of humor to everything as well. I loved the third act. It's totally worth tracking down for fans of horror or fantasy. Undoubtedly, it must have terrified Russian children growing up in the 60s.

Louise (Dorothy Gish) and Henriette (Lillian Gish) are brought up together but are not really sisters--Louise was left on church steps as a baby and Henriette's parents took her in. Both are orphaned when their parents die and Louise is struck blind. Henriette takes her to Paris in hope of finding a cure. There they are separated--Louise is forced to work with villainous beggars and Henriette falls in love with Chevalier de Vaudrey (drop dead handsome Joseph Schildkraut). The story is wildly implausible with some twists that had me smirking. It's also overlong and VERY melodramatic...but it still works. It was made on a large scale with beautiful settings, costumes and a cast of hundreds. D.W. Griffith did a wonderful job of directing--especially when the peasants revolt and overthrow the government. I usually hate historical movies but I loved this one! The cast overacts wildly (especially Monte Blue as Danton) except for Schildkraut who underplays--and it works. Throroughly engrossing and highly recommended
