On comprend vite que ce n'est pas seulement l'enquete et le mystere qui comptent mais plutot le jeu de dupe auxquels se livrent le temoin et le coupable, personnifies par un bourgeois aigri et un employe emotionnellement fragile. Pourtant, le trait n'est jamais caricatural : si tous deux exploitent les circonstances a leur avantage, ils sont aussi en recherche de quelque chose de plus profond, avec une sincerite sur laquelle l'incertitude planera jusqu'au bout. Malgre cette excellente base de travail, "Avant l'aube" semble a un moment donne ne plus savoir quelle voie emprunter et s'enlise dans des pratiques plus routinieres. Le suspens n'en ayant jamais vraiment ete mis un (on a vite compris le fin mot de l'histoire), l'issue de l'affrontement se fait attendre et s'en tire avec une pirouette un peu trop abrupte pour ne pas y deceler de fortes hesitations quant a la maniere de conclure la chose.
