Waea A (gb) wrote: Beautiful Lies was a fun and in my opinion, at times touching, romantic comedy. Nathalie Baye was especially great in the film, very animated and simply funny. This film lends light to the versatility of Audrey Tautou as an actress who in this film deviates from her usual cute, quirky and feminin persona to a more strict and cynical --yet still very human-- character. The dialogue on several occasions was completely hilarious. I am a bit surprised by the very low rating on Rotten Tomatoes that the film received, as normally my tastes are in line with the Rotten Tomatoes reviews. All in all this was a very real and naturally acted film that managed to stay light and positive despite the heavy and at times very sorrowful undercurrent. Watching it was like a fluffy cloud of whipped cream on my rainy day in London ; )

Rudy M (mx) wrote: Oh my. This was my second attempt at this movie. The first time around, I watched about 15 to 20 minutes of it, wondering if the movie was ever going to start a certain plot. Now after watching the full thing, I know there's not one plot, but there's two. Unfortunately enough, writer/director duo McGehee/Siegel brings neither to a fulfilling end. "Green" (the side where they pick up a dog) is a lackadaisical and uninteresting day-in-the-life story. "Yellow" (the side where they pick up the phone) keeps running around in circles and has no real progression. The morale of the story: if you ever have the choice to pick up a dog or a phone: go for the phone. Cause at the end of the day, you'll find that it's easier to throw away. In any case, your night will be better spent doing anything else but watching this movie. Verdict: AVOID.

As usual it is the real doers with their asses on the line at the mercy of politicians. Plays like a poor-man's DELTA FORCE; with the capable Wings Hauser in the lead.

Budge B (de) wrote: This is an intelligently organised review of the role and status of the horror movie in the USA in the last quarter of the 20th century. It juxtaposes clips from horror and science fiction classics - the living dead, towns being sanitised to stop plague spreading, the dangers of the unknown, the ephemeral veneer of civilisation - with clips of television coverage of Vietnam and urban rioting in the USA. The real footage is every bit as horrific as the fiction. We get a roll call of the giants of North American horror - Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, John Landis, George Romero, David Cronenberg, Tom Savini - explaining their influences and commenting on the reactions to their work. It seems they were often damned as un-American, as being subversive, purely because they might suggest that American society could break down in that way. Tobe Hunter, for instance, has his "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" hinging on a fuel shortage; George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is a commentary on consumerism as the dead are still drawn to the Mall. It's a very entertaining and thought provoking work which most horror fans will thoroughly enjoy. I would, however, advocate buying it as part of "The Wes Craven Collection", where it is packaged as an extra along with four of Craven's films and represents much better value in that form.

Bill B (us) wrote: Surprisingly effective tale of a young man's fractured personality taking on the persona of his deceased father's medical dummy, which he'd used as a ventriloquist's dummy. This kid has issues from the word go, but the really strange part is that no one notices as he starts speaking to the damned dummy like it's his buddy or something, and when he reaches the age of 18 and still obviously thinks that the dummy is real, SOMEONE should have stepped in, y'know?Never scary per se, but has some creepy moments just because the Leon character is so unnerving as he speaks about the dummy.Worth a rental.

rocknblues 8 (es) wrote: John Ford's take on race relations in the early 60's is a surprise path taken by the conservative director. It stars Woody Strode as Sergeant Rutledge, a man accused of rape and double murder in the old west. This film came out 2 years before the more well known "To Kill a Mockingbird" and even though it's not as gripping it's a fair film with some intense scenes that are letdown by some shady acting and eye rolling contrivances and red herrings. But that shouldn't be blamed on the lead performances. All of them more serviceable, but Ford simply tries to hard to get a reaction out of people. I admit the ending kind of caught me off guard, but overall the film doesn't stand out to Ford's top films.

Mickaw90 (ru) wrote: Clumsy storyline which could have been much better.. strong cast. Mickey Rourke was main star but for me Joseph Gordon - Levitt did the best performance in this movie. Also Diane Lane and Thomas Jane done good job. Other ways the story sounded interesting but the script was a weak..
