Jesse O (ag) wrote: If you'd like to see a film that is like Romeo and Juliet had a baby with Rachel Ray's cooking show then this is the film for you. It really isn't as bad as it sounds, but I wouldn't say it's good either. I think the movie works best as a whimsical mystery and following the reporter trying to figure out what was up with this woman and her stew that had an otherworldly quality to them that would calm a serial killer, give a man back his sense of smell and simply put everybody around her stew and its smell in a trance. The story, even before you find out what made the stew (ie: the romance stuff near the end), isn't great. It's just not particularly interesting to follow, the reporter goes from person to person finding out little details that then lead to a bigger question that needs to be answer. Then when he finds out that answer, there are even more questions left. I think the story should've been simplified, it didn't need to be as elaborate as it was. The romance stuff isn't really any better. It's corny and, unsurprisingly, melodramatic. The movie is never bad, and again the mysterious and whimsical aspects of the film were good and the movie does have a solid cast, but the story isn't good and more elaborate than it needs to be. Still an average film at best though, so it's not all terrible, but I wouldn't recommend it either.

Matthew C (es) wrote: I dig low budget science fiction. Sometimes the most creative stuff comes out of it. And though this movie can(TM)t go on a list with Primer or Monsters, it's still interesting and worth checking out if you're similarly inclined. It reminded me a bit of the TV movie version of The Lathe of Heaven from the early 80s (or late 70s?), though not nearly as good. There's a lot of psychological mumbo-jumbo, mixed with some New Age nonsense and some theoretic physics. And sometimes that mix works, while other times, not so much. The movie's biggest fault is that it's too long. While I found myself surprisingly engrossed in the first half, I started to drift at about the middle point, and by the ending I was starting to get antsy and watch the clock. I'm not sure why the choice was made to give the whole thing a pseudo-noir vibe, but I actually liked that quite a bit, especially early on where it added to surrealism when someone would whip out a cell phone. So, while I can(TM)t suggest you run right out and see it, it's not too bad.

Davey M (ru) wrote: W. C. Fields is a genius. His completely natural control of his on-screen persona (which most likely was pretty indiscernible from his off-screen persona), his ability to allow the verbal gags to somehow emerge intelligibly from his strange mutterings--Fields is quite simply the greatest miracle American comedy has ever seen, a wholly unlikely comedic persona that is absolutely perfect and utterly hilarious. This bizarre concoction (which involves a mythical country in which all men are named George and all women are named Angela, political power is obtained via arm wrestle, people dress in goat costumes and run really really really fast, and cross-eyed spies played by Ben Turpin may be lurking around any corner) is one of his greatest vehicles, a sublime bit of early-talkie absurdism that proves yet again how deliriously weird pre-Code American movie comedies were.
