It's also the first film to feature Tomas Milian and the first where Lee Van Cleef is the leading hero of the story.Cleef plays a bounty hunter, Jonathan Corbett, who has been employed to track down Cuchillo Sanchez (Milian) for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. Corbett spends the whole second act in a cat and mouse chase after Cuchillo. The wile Cuchillo manages to escape Corbett over and over, always leaving the bounty hunter in a worse off predicament. These characters and their arcs are some of the most intriguing you'll find in any spaghetti.But the most famous aspect of The Big Gundown is the Big Gundown. Sollima gives us one of the best mexican standoff moments in the history of western cinema. Watch and you'll learn that for some it's not always bad to bring a knife to a gunfight.And I can't forget to mention Ennio Morricone's score. As you would expect, it is totally awesome. Morricone seems to always attach himself to the very best western films. And The Big Gundown is definitely one of the greatest.

Zachary M (mx) wrote: I can clearly remember growing up in high school when this movie was all the rage. Everyone was talking about it and quoting it left and right. I'll also admit I found it fairly entertaining, and that's why after years of not seeing it, I wanted to check it out again. Boy has this thing not aged well. The film's premise is still sound and some of the characters still feel fun, but most of the jokes and gags really don't work for me anymore. Now some do, but I found myself rolling my eyes more often than laughing, which for a comedy is a real problem. The only thing I could think of after the fact, was did I really find it that funny all those years ago, or did I think I liked it because most of my peers did, and there for I was supposed to like it? If for nothing else raising the question of such ideas of how film is influenced by peers, social groups, and a collective the film was worth the re-watch. But not for Ben Stiller's scene chewing, defiantly not for that.
