Dan L (mx) wrote: It's not a long movie, however, the story made you feel that the movie was long. It's about government secret info between CIA and a former Amercian Japanese soldier (assassin). Good storyline and great filming. Editing was good too but I think they can make the movie even more shocking with more surprises and actions. A good Japanese movie in a Hollywood style.

Dan C (br) wrote: I absolutely loved Gettysburg, and found the audiobook of "Gods and Generals" extremely compelling, but the attempt to adapt it to film was an abysmal failure. Worse, I made the silly mistake of taking a date to see it. I am about the biggest Civil War buff you ever want to meet, but I am not ashamed to admit that I slept through at least an hour of this mess. Stephen Lang is galaxies worse as Stonewall Jackson than he was as Pickett in Gettysburg, and Duvall as Robert E. Lee was sleep-inducing, as well. Honestly, I can't think of a single thing to say to praise this monstrosity. The battle scenes feel generic, even though they are miles more realistic than those in Gettysburg, and the terrible acting performances and atrocious direction are like poison pills for a film that spends a lot more time than its predecessor following the generals around between engagements. Probably the single worst aspect of it all, though, is the fact that there is no dialogue, in the true sense. The characters speak to each other in melodramatic, long speeches. It would be awkward to watch even if it weren't so incredibly boring.

David Bowie's powerful screen charisma begs the question as to why he never became a huge movie star, and Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed the score) is equally powerful. Takeshi Kitano makes his dramatic debut here, and provides the movie's most memorable moments, particularly the tearjerking final scene, in which Kitano's smiling babyface will melt even the blackest of hearts. It's no wonder he was a beloved children's entertainer in Japan before he moved on to a rich directing and acting career. This is a film that is seldom discussed, but well worth seeing.
Lovro H (au) wrote: I've known about this movie for about 3 years now and I can't believe I've only seen it for the first time now. Martyrs follows two women, Anna and Lucie. Anna was, as a teen, kidnapped and tortured. Upon finding her, the police take her to the orphanage and there she meets Lucie, a girl who seems to be the only friend she has. And now, 15 years later, Anna is still trying to find the people who kidnapped her and she does. Now, I will not go into larger details about the plot because of how unpredictable and surprising this movie this. The plot surprised me four times! I wasn't expecting such a well developed plot, honestly. The ending is quite messed up and leaves a few questions unanswered, but it's satisfying and quite disturbing. The characters are, as well, well developed. Anna and Lucie have great chemistry between them and you actually care for what happens to them. The movie's direction is great. The atmosphere of the movie is very grim and dirty. The gore & violence is amazing! The movie has some truly memorable (in a bad way, I guess) torture scenes and it's hard to watch at times, but it doesn't affect the movie in a bad way, at all, it makes it even better. The soundtrack is great and there's many really cool songs that I added to my playlist! There's a big message at the end of the movie and the last minute might affect on how much the people will like/hate the movie. All in all, a great torture-porn movie with great acting and charaters, an intriguing plot with unpredictable twists and a beautiful soundtrack. I would highly recommend checking this movie out to anyone who wants to watch a good movie.
