Not Reconciled

Not Reconciled

Not Reconciled, the title of the Straubs’ first feature-length film, is engraved on their work like an inscription. It is a story about the continuity and collapse of history, the power of suppression, and the terror of reconciliation; loyalty, treason and revenge. In a brave cinematic game, Heinrich Böll’s story Billiards at Half-Past Nine is split up into cracks, blocks, breaks and sudden turns, as the life story of a German family, covering numerous generations, is propelled forward. Terms such as “interwar period” and “post-war period” are blown up with a single cut, word or click of a billiard ball. Not Reconciled remains one of the most important German film of the past fifty years.

Dervilla O (mx) wrote: Very well executed movie set in Sweden at the turn of the last century. A woman who finds herself married to a redeemable but ultimately abusive alcoholic husband re-discovers an old camera won in a lottery, and uses it both to see her world, capture glimpses of her life, and as an artistic escape from her difficult place and troubled/abused life. The cinematography is excellent as are actors. The hardship is palpable, and feels familiar to other movies made in Ireland around this time. At 131 minutes found it to be on the too long side.

Shane D (kr) wrote: Really, there might be nothing more enjoyable than revisiting the action classics of the late 80's and early 90's. So unbelievable, the dialogue is comedy gold and the plots are normally head scratchingly fantastic. This is no exception. Van Damme (I think is wearing mullet extensions) is typically brilliantly OTT as is Lance Henriksen as the archetypal maniac bad guy. Still, its not what would be generally considered a good movie, quite the contrary, its as good as Wilfred Brimley's French accent.

Dan F (jp) wrote: I wanted to love this, I really did. The creature is magnificent as you'd expect from Stan Winston. The film is very weak.
