(us) wrote: Anchored by powerful performances from Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, The Strangers blends gut-wrenching anxiety with devastating relationship drama in a lean home invasion chiller that relies solely on tension and suspense -- and proves loud noises, a secluded setting and old-fashioned music can be all it takes to make a quality horror film.
(jp) wrote: The only reason I have for not giving this 1/2 a star is that the camera work and audio are much better than in some other real turkeys. Ancient Evil is so badly acted by some of the cast (not all are bad) and the storyline is so pathetic that it feels like this was trying to be a spoof, problem is that the movie is trying to be a horror movie and no a spoof. The main character (don't know his name or the characters name, and don't care to but it is the one is rebellious and always saying how bad everything sucks) is so bad it almost became funny, but than you realize he is playing the character straight and you feel sorry for him. The truth is this movie is bad and might deserve its place on the imdb top 100 worst movies of all-time.
(br) wrote: this was an interesting, at times ridiculous film. i think it did a good job of making us care about the violin and actually seeing it as a protagonist rather than the characters around it. but there was definitely a disparity between the quality of stories - some of them, like the story with the little boy with the heart problem, were actually touching, whereas other stories, like the one about the british violin player who could only compose during sex were laughable. in all i think this film was typically canadian, in that it had a single reveal which made the entire story make sense, but because it kept it from the audience for the majority of the film, we watched, not really understanding what was special about the violin or why it was linked to the fortune-teller's prediction. i think this film would have been more effective if it had a coherent story outside of the reveal, that would make watching the actual film a memorable experience, rather than just waiting for the moment when it all makes sense. also, even with samuel l jackson starring, this film still managed to retain that quintessentially canadian boringness/mundanity that permeates all their films.
(ru) wrote: The forbidden love triangle was to cruel to the end. This film is definately for soemone who wants to forget tragedy in their lives and for a time Ethan Frome'sc story of desire with expert performances from all the cast can make you remember your troubles are nothing compared to this script.
(gb) wrote: It's like Hallowe'en with Karate. That isn't a bad thing...in fact this movie has some great scares and a great fight scene at the end.
(kr) wrote: Great dance numbers. Stupid plot.

(au) wrote: By the book murder investigation by Virgil Tibbs. Decent whodunit but lacks the racial plot that made "In the Heat of the Night" so good. Some interesting parenting on display from days gone bye in this one - one scene where father and pre-teen son smoke cigars and fill the kid's room with second hand smoke and another where the defiant brat gets slapped three times in the face by Dad (kiddeserved it).
