(ru) wrote: It gets an extra half star because the ending finally made me want to pay attention. It's slow burn if by burn you mean painful. The acting is mediocre at best, the dialogue made me cringe. The main character is simply not likeable, and the atmospheric build up just wasn't there. Essentially, this was one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen, and the semi-entertaining ending did not make up for it.I'm thoroughly disappointed, because I loved House of the Devil. This would have been more effective at a half hour long. Either that, or there just had to be more. If the type of scares and suspense that had made the last fifteen minutes worth my time had been there for the majority of the movie, I would have enjoyed it far more. What this film is missing is follow-through. I expected a ghost story, which makes me think of creepy atmosphere, suspenseful noises, etc. But for most of the movie, it's just the two leads waiting for something to happen. I realize that they were trying to make it look like Sarah Paxton's character was imagining it, but that was not successful. In all, I see what this film is trying to accomplish, but it didn't to it successfully. I hope Ti West's third movie is better and that House of the Devil wasn't a glitch.

(au) wrote: The script is actually pretty good, and so is the acting, but the film visually looks very cheap, and the score doesn't fit lots of the time, plus the lack of gore takes the fun out of the kill scenes. 32/100

FBI agent Peter Strahm plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with police detective Mark Hoffman after coming to suspect that he was Jigsaw's accomplice; meanwhile 5 people fight for their lives in a maze full of death traps. The writing is really poor, as Strahm's investigation into Hoffman couldn't be more boring and the death maze segments seem completely disconnected from the rest of the film. Void of any suspense or thrills, Saw V is a pale imitation of what has come before.

(br) wrote: The only point of seeing this is hearing the interviews. The visuals do nothing for his story and merely fill in the gap. It actually began to bug me having to watch these images and was longing to see something more. I would quite happily just listen to the interviews rather than have the visuals as well. Apart from that I found Kurt's dialogue extremely interesting, though this is not so accessible for everyone to watch mostly hard core Cobain fans will be able to sit through this.

(ag) wrote: Ever the tough guy, Jean Gabin plays a steely farm owner who runs a strict operation. When his grandson becomes involved with dangerous criminals, the family farm becomes a battleground. Gabin defends his home from the gangsters using equally brutal measures and traps. In addition to the criminals, the police begin to look in on the farm and the numerous deaths. Not Gabin's most complex performance, nor the most well constructed gangster flick, La Horse is still a satisfying, bloody thriller which is plenty fun worth looking for.
(kr) wrote: supposedly one of the best sci-fi film ever made. I'm not a big sci-fi fan but I do want to see some challenging images when I choose to watch one rather than a geezer in a trenchcoat wandering around hotel corridoors. This may have been an innovative story at the time of release but I found it boring and Goddard, as too often, doesn't reveal enough of what's going on to keep my attention.

(gb) wrote: Wild at Heart is a crazy ride through a crazy land filled with all manner of crazy people. The film can be many things: comedy, romance, adventure, thriller, horror, etc. It draws many comparisons as well: Repo Man, Raising Arizona, Easy Rider. But at its core it is a unique love story that works. Wild at Heart is the type of film you just have to see for yourself.
