(nl) wrote: Starts extremely well and builds high hopes, but ultimately fails to deliver in a slightly disappointing ending. I guess it's realistic, but you really want the film to leave you with some feeling other than "Ah, I hoped that wouldn't happen." Nonetheless, brilliant performances from all actors involved, especially Reece Thompson.
(it) wrote: I found this story very interesting, although not as in empowering in the film version as in the book. I thought the excellent coverage of the time of the cultural Revolution and the alienation of the intelligentsia was strong in the film but even stronger in the book. I'm not sure why the excellent ending of the book was altered for the film. Generally a very good film, and certainly worth watching, but an even stronger book.

(es) wrote: Pretty great, weird but great.

(gb) wrote: I really enjoyed this melodramatic gothic mystery tale. There aren't many big stars in it, but everyone does a good job. It's exciting and has romance, a lot of drama, and even some laughs. This is a very interesting movie, more like the 40s than 50s, actually. I recommend it.
(br) wrote: Pay no attention to the other "professional" reviews of this magically entertaining classic from the 80's. It's worth the price of admission just to see Rick Baker's astonishing makeup and creature creation effects. Lithgow is at his finest dramatically and comically. The pacing of the film is a little bit suspect, but who cares. It's a heartwarming and beautiful film, and only the most cynical will find a reason to give it a thumbs down.
