Robyn E (gb) wrote: My love of Alan Rickman and his usual quiet, good work in this small movie makes me want to give if four stars, but Sigourney Weaver's over the top, not at all subtle work almost ruined the whole movie for me. Nice little indie film, too much star power. They should have chosen a more subdued actor.

Adrian B (jp) wrote: Following the film "Pather Panchali," Sayatjit Ray's "Aparajito" is an overwhelming masterpiece that has vastly grown with age. This superior motion picture shows the family in the city, Benaris to be exact, where tragic circumstances (both in the previous and current picture), leave the father and sister dead due to illnesses. This causes Apu and his mother to move out of the city, where Apu goes to grade school and then gets the opportunity to go college, leaving his mother in a very lonesome state. Even though this film takes place in the 1950's and is in India, someone today like me living in Canada could sadly find themselves in the same situation. All the situations are realistically depicted. The loneliness the mother faces is so overwhelming, that it eventually leads to a significant decline in her health and sadly, her death. If you don't feel tears run down your face, you did not watch this film properly. Absolutely stunning!
Ben L (br) wrote: This review will be short and won't contain a whole lot of details about what happened in the movie. The reason is that Driving Miss Daisy was short and not much happened in it. I had high hopes for this movie, considering it won a best picture Oscar, and I'm a big fan of Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. Sadly, I cannot recall the last time I watched a movie that managed to approach so many important or interesting topics, and then so carefully avoid actually addressing them. Racism down south is a big problem? Well, Jessica Tandy refuses to admit she is a racist and no one ever confronts her on that lie. Hoke is illiterate, that's going to be a big deal, right? Never fear he'll be reading by the next scene. Alzheimers and dementia are hard to deal with, aren't they? Well Driving Miss Daisy does us the courtesy of fast-forwarding through that struggle. So what the movie ends up being is just a lighter-than-air fluff piece about 2 unlikely friends, done with some awful age makeup. I could watch a movie like this every day of the week on the Hallmark Channel. Frankly, the TV show Quantum Leap covered this same story in its episode "The Color of Truth" more effectively in about 40 minutes than this movie manages in an hour and a half. I feel no desire to ever sit through this bland and pointless movie ever again.
