Kevin B (jp) wrote: There are plenty of bad science fiction films out there. This isn't one of them. The first thing I'll tell you is that Lifeforce is entertaining. You won't find yourself bored watching this one. Sure, you may find some of the zombie creatures that look like puppets ridiculous by today's standard's of horror makeup. But whether that interests you, or makes you laugh, you'll still be entertained. The thing about Lifeforce is that it starts off really strong and big budget. The crew is on a space shuttle heading for a comet and encounters a gigantic space ship that contains frozen bodies as well as dead bat creatures. The crew then decides to take the suspended bodies back to Earth. From here, it get a little wishy-washy in how the narrative jumps forward. Remember when you watched Aliens, and in the beginning they found Ripley's escape pod, and it was dark and empty and they had to laser-cut the door off. It had that real feeling of "uhoh... anything can happen" and it kept the pulse rate going, even though it ended up being about an hour of Ripley in a board room followed by a hospital stay. Zzzz... Tobey Hooper does nothing cool like that here. Instead he just jumps to there was a fire, the rest of the crew is dead, and the one guy the female vampire likes is still alive. Oh... Ok... That's a bit rushed. Then it settles into a second half which is mainly about the guy and this female "vampire" having him come to terms with what is going on and what she's up to. I found this to be mostly believable because she was naked and highly attractive that anyone who ran into her would likely not shoot at her, and would likely approach her to figure out what was wrong. To their undoing. It has the right amount of suspense and draw to keep you watching, not just because the lead actress is highly attractive. There is an ending here, in the third part, and it does give you a conclusion that ends the story, but it is a messy ride. They basically had the ambition in the script to make all of London go bonkers and explode into chaos, and tried to film that. Way too ambitious for their budget and the effects of the time period. You have to give them credit for trying to make it work though. It's might have been more believable if you had a 28 Days Later kind of zombies running around killing people, but here you have what looks like skinned puppets. It's not good. But again, it's damn fine entertainment. If you want something mindless that isn't too tense and a good watch of things exploding and weirdness going on. You can't do better than Lifeforce. It's a movie I'm proud to own.

Raji K (jp) wrote: Robert De Niro and Zac Efron co-star in the comedy Dirty Grandpa. De Niro is Dick Kelly and his wife has passed away after being faithfully married for a long time. He wants so spread his wings and go to Florida and party. He enlists his grandson Jason (Efron) to take him to spring break so they can party and score with chicks. Jason is uptight and conservative, and on the verge of a getting married to a bitchy wife. Dick wants him to loosen up and forget her, and they do everything between drinking, partying drugs and getting arrested. Within the first 20 minutes the film writes itself and is quite predictable. Clearly the idea is to have Jason leave the bitch, give up being a lawyer and be with this new chick pursue his true passion of being a photographer. Dick is clearly supposed to connect more with his family of which he has been quite distant with over the years. Dirty Grandpa is a pretty bad comedy that aims for shock comedy and value. The real only highlight of the film was Aubrey Plaza (April from Parks and Rec). Sadly, too much of the film relies on the antics of Jason Mantzoukas carelessly trying to sell drugs of eager spring breakers. Efron continues to play these roles, and De Niro continues to choose questionable films. There aren't too many unexpected or good laughs in this film to warrant this watching. Hot girls in bikinis and Zoey Deutch, and for girls a constantly nude Efron will be the only appeal. Dirty Grandpa did not have a high ceiling or potential to begin with, but the film is even more juvenile and less funny that I hoped. -3.8.2017
