(es) wrote: The summer of 1942 brought Naval stalemate to the Pacific as the American and Japanese fleets stood at even numbers each waiting for the other to begin a renewed offensive. "Midway" tells the story of this historic June battle where a Japanese carrier force, in an attempt to occupy Midway island and lure the American fleet to destruction, was meet valiently by US forces operating off of three aircraft carriers and numerous escort ships. It was the first battle in which naval air power was extensivly used, and at its conclusion the Japanese Carrier force had been completly destroyed which lead the way for the US 1943 and 44 offensives which would eventually bring the Pacific War to a close...I had hopes for this "epic" war movie about an important turning point during WWII. With such a strong ensemble cast (Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, Robert Mitchum, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune etc) the movie had a solid base to stand on in the combination with an intriguing and strong true story as the backdrop. But, unfortunately the movie goes the wrong way with several things. The first thing I reacted on was of course the idea of letting all the japanese characters speak english. When you have been able to secure the participation of such a great actor as Toshiro Mifune and then forces him to speak english, it makes no sense in my book at least. This makes the "authentic" platform stumble out the window. The same goes for the excessive use of newsreel and real footage edited into the movie, which as well makes you think that the whole bloody budget went to the casting and nothing to securing a movie with great battle scenes. And too many scenes are classic green screen scenes which makes "Midway" look like something produced in the 50s. Another problem is the added side plot about Captain Garths (Charlton Heston) sons love problems. It adds nothing to the story and just makes the whole thing become unbalanced. I reckon they wanted to make an epic war movie, but ended up with a poor result due to not enough money and a script with an unfocused storyline. And the fact is that I thought "Midway" was quite boring at times. The edge and tension youd expect during war was not really there. Thus this one nosedived straight into the ocean like a shot down Brewster F2A Buffalo for me...
